Hello SASers!

It was a great meeting tonight and I gotta say I’m glad to be back! It seems as though this term is going to be a busy one full of great opportunities to not only have fun but to educate others about sustainable practices as well.

Recycling News

Within the next couple weeks Mary Brennan will be coming to a meeting to discuss recycling practices at URI sporting events and new recycling stickers. (TBA)

Lexicon Posters

Lexicon might be coming to URI with the help of SAS involvement. This organization creates posters that educate the public about sustainable practices. We would be responsible for creating about 30 backboards to support them and will be deciding on a venue once Lexicon is confirmed.

Earth Day News

Earth Day will come before you know it! And I for one can’t wait!

WBRU has shown interest in sponsoring Earth Day this year. What this means is that WBRU could be providing hybrid and electric cars for the day, possibly a DJ, and giving shout-outs over their station. Fingers crossed SASers!

We are going to be looking into a possible Earth Day tree planting at URI. I for one think the more trees on campus the better!

A possible Mock-Oil spill could be happening on Earth Day as well. What could this mean? Who knows? But I’m excited to find out!

Sun Roasters Coffee

The owner of this sustainable fair-trade organic coffee brand is interested in coming to give a talk at URI. It should be really interesting and will probably take place after Earth Day.

Eco-Rep Program in Dorms

This is an idea we are currently working on that would implement a RAM-like person in dorms that would help dorms become more sustainable. Some ideas we thought of that they could be responsible for would be measuring energy use, water use, and possibly waste production.

We need to look more into this but it sounds like a resource students and URI would benefit from.

Permaculture at Peckham Farm

There is apparently a permaculture garden at peckham farm that SAS might be helping maintain in the spring. Who knew something like this was right in our back yard?

We should be hearing more news about this next meeting.

Composting at URI

The outing clubs Brendan Loflin is petitioning the university to start composting on campus. If you’re interested in joining his cause or learning more information email him at brendan...@my.uri.edu

That’s all for now SASers! I told you we covered a lot!

Hope to see you next week!

“We don't think a sustainable society need be stagnant, boring, uniform, or rigid. It need not be, and probably could not be, centrally controlled or authoritarian. It could be a world that has the time, the resources, and the will to correct its mistakes, to innovate, to preserve the fertility of its planetary ecosystems. It could focus on mindfully increasing quality of life rather than on mindlessly expanding material consumption and the physical capital stock.”
