Two quick suggestions if you are applying for field schools or other
field opportunities this summer.
1. If you really want to get into the field this summer, it is a good
idea to send in more than one application. You never know how many
applicants they will have or the criteria they will use to select the
students (e.g., seniority, local students, etc.).
2. If you find a field school that looks interesting (on the web or
even in one of the posts in this discussion group), it would be a good
idea to talk about your choice with one the archaeologists on campus.
Some field schools are better than others, and one of us may have
knowledge about the one to which you are thinking of applying. For
example, I have posted a number of things that have come to my
attention via emails or flyers in the mail, but I don't necessarily
have first hand knowledge of these. So, it is always good to have a
faculty member look at the program and give you their opinion.
There are five full-time archaeology faculty (in four different
departments: anthropology, history, art history, philosophy) at URI
(along with some wonderful part-time lecturers in anthropology). For a
list of full-time faculty and their specialties, see:

Feel free to contact one of us for advice (see URI directory for email
addresses).
