I have had a number of inquiries from students who are interested in
getting field experience, but aren't able to afford the travel/ fees
involved with many of the field schools. I can sympathize! Below are a
few ideas for those of you in this situation. If I learn of other
scholarship/ low cost opportunities, I will post them here. If anyone
else has other suggestions, please pass them along!

1. The URI College of Arts & Science has a grant program called the
"Beaupre Hope & Heritage" Fund. According to the website, "The fund
primarily provides travel and lodging expenses for art and sciences
students to attend conferences, present papers, exhibit work or
perform in concerts." Although it doesn't specifically list travel to
a field program, I think it would be worth inquiring/ applying.

2. The Archaeological Institute of America offers a limited number of
$1000 scholarships for those attending field schools (application due
date is March 15th):

3. The UCLA Costen Institute of Archaeology has 20 different field
programs in 14 different countries. They offer a range of scholarships
and financial aid packages (see previous post on 2/6/09 for more
information).

4. The Lubbock Lake Landmark's regional research program (archaeology,
geology, paleontology) is looking for volunteers for the upcoming 2009
field season. They provide housing and food, you just need to get
transportation to Texas (see previous post on 1/8/09 for more
information).

5. The National Forest Service has a volunteer program called Passport
in Time. There are no fees to participate on these digs/ experiences,
but you do need to pay for travel (and perhaps lodging).
