Fixing animal welfare in DeKalb County is a long hard slog but we have to stick with it - especially, when we have opposing forces like the American Kennel Club fighting the legislation that we desperately need in DeKalb County.
We have learned an out of state representative from the American Kennel Club is presenting to the DeKalb Board of Commissioners on November 8th to try to influence them to stop legislation requiring unregulated (backyard) breeders to obtain permits and be subject to inspection. The AKC opposes all breeding controls regardless of whether they are in the best interest of the community or the animals. DeKalb currently has hundreds of dogs dumped on our streets, presenting a safety hazard or left to starve. This problem ultimately ends up in our overcrowded shelter where dogs are euthanized because there is no space.
This past Monday night (10/28), 29 dogs came in from one “neglect” situation. The next Tuesday afternoon (10/29) 12 more from another one came in on top of the usual intake. This is beyond awful!
Our shelter currently has over 600 dogs. It was built for 280 and has a maximum capacity of 450. Unregulated breeding is a significant contributor to our current companion animal overpopulation.
Help us send a message to the Board of Commissioners NOT to be swayed by the AKC and their greedy politics.
Join us as we STAND IN PROTEST on November 8th at 9:30am in Maloof Auditorium, 1300 Commerce Drive, Decatur, GA. We need the County to see that the AKC is WRONG. This meeting is so important in our fight for less neglected and abandoned dogs in DeKalb and we need to have a room FULL of red shirts for this.
We will send out one more reminder before this very important meeting. Thank you for all you do and for staying with us.
Warmly,
Advocates for DeKalb Animals!

Once again, we are at the mercy of the whims of the government, and now we must accommodate yet another change in the meeting.
The meeting initially scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8th at 9:00 has been rescheduled to Tuesday, Nov. 19th at 1:00.
BUT… WE WILL NOT BE DETERRED. We are more determined than ever to deliver our message in the form of silent protest during the AKC presentation on Tuesday November 19 at 1PM at the Shirley A Trussell Bldg, 178 Sams Street Decatur, GA 30030.
In the meantime, send your “I agree with Kirby” email or write your own to tell the Commissioners that we need this legislation.
Thank you for all of your support and stay with us as we continue to fight for improved animal welfare in DeKalb County.

I saw on the AKC website that it has been, but I don't trust them.
