So often, northern rescuers come to our aid in saving dogs that
uneducated/greedy Georgians have handled irresponsibly. This is perhaps one
of the worst case scenarios - a good ol' boy was running a puppy mill and
dumped 37 on a roadside (4 of which were killed in traffic). Rumors led
authorities to the man responsble where they found another 84 in poor
conditions/needing rescue. There's simply no way a GA rescue could handle a
problem of this magnitude nor is there an official chow rescue (I know of
just one single super-human of a guy that advocates for GA chows).
As you can imagine, saving these 100++ dogs has been no small endeavor for
the group from NY that traveled here to do it. They are asking for
everyone's help in helping them fund the needed care for these poor babies
and of course, if you know of folks in the NE who might be willing to
foster, they are badly needed! And if you know folks with a love for this
breed that would be willing to provide a forever home, I'm sure they'd be
happy to tranport the dogs to just about anywhere.
We owe MUCH gratitude to Chow Chow Rescue of Central New York, Inc for
helping these beautiful dogs -- many of them just little fuzzy ball pups. If
you can't in the ways mentioned above, definitely visit them on Facebook and
thank them for their heroic effort!

As a supporter of numerous animal welfare charities, as an animal lover and
chow chow owner, I believe that this story should be brought to the
attention of as many individuals as possible. In mid to late March of this
year a friend of mine and chow breeder posted a story on Facebook
“straight off the chow rescues page”. Apparently a number of chows were
dumped alongside the road in Meriwether County/Greenville, GA. Of these
chows, 13 were captured (catch pole), four were hit and killed by cars,
three were taken in by Coweta AC and the rest were on the loose. As it
turns out, the person responsible for this was a preacher, a breeder and
the owner of a chow chow puppy mill; Rick Godfrey of Heavenly Chows
kennel. After an investigation, his license was revoked and he
relinquished 100+ chows in his kennel to the animal control in Meriwether
County, GA. All are young chows, some with litters of pups. Chow Chow
Rescue of Central New York is trying to place these animals in foster homes
and with rescue groups. Following are two letters from Cindy Stone of
CCRCNY. It is hard for me to believe that something of this magnitude did
not make national news, but help is desperately needed in the form of media
coverage, people to contact local rescue groups, legal council on animal
abuse prosecution, and, in general, putting the word out as to what has
taken place here. If that can be accomplished, perhaps donations of time
and money and foster homes will afford these beautiful animals a second
chance as well as increase awareness of the necessity to end puppy mills and
the inhumane conditions they perpetrate.
I have attached two notes from Cindy that made it to Facebook in the past
month. The second one posted on April 20th. Apparently, all these animals
are still in the kennels and the Chow Chow Rescue group has been given 30
days to remove them from the property to safe haven. To add insult to
injury, you will note at the end of the second posting that “that the kennel
owner has informed the shelter that he will no longer be feeding or giving
water to the Chows since he signed them over to the shelter.”
I am sure, in your business, you find yourselves stunned in some new way on
a daily basis by people’s cruelty. This is beyond heartbreaking . Although
I have never met Cindy Stone, I am sure she is absolutely overwhelmed at
this point and would greatly appreciate any assistance she could get. My
certainty is, there would be plenty of people to help if this could make
local, area and even national news.

I don't know if you have heard about the 34 chows dumped in
Meriwether/Newnan counties in early March. Chow Rescue of Central New York
and others are working on getting these chows pulled from the shelters,
vetted, and adopted or into foster care. The current situation is that the
Dept of Ag has now gone into the kennels that dumped these chows and has
pulled their licenses. The kennel owners have now surrendered the remaining
74 chows to the Meriwether animal shelter.
This will be a tremendous financial responsibility for our rescue so we are
also asking for donations to help defray the cost of vetting these Chow
Chows.
We are 501 C 3 and we will send you a donation receipt.

Hi Everyone,
I thought I would give you an update on the 100+ Chows in Georgia.
Amy Young, Lynette White and Cheryl went to the Kennel on Sunday night.
Here is what Amy reported to me.
The count of 74 from animal control was incorrect. There are actually 84
The Chows are kept in wooden runs with tin roofs.
The kennel owner signed over all of the Chows.
· We have 30 days to remove all of the Chows from the property.
· Amy and her crew first separated the male Chows from the female
Chows so we wouldn’t have any accidental breedings.
· They then labeled every run with the color and age of each Chow.
· The majority of the Chows are blue, black and creams.
· They think there is one pregnant Chow but there may be two to
three others.
· Some of the Chows have cataracts and entropion. UGH!
· One cream Chow is blind and is doing circles.
· Most are not aggressive. They just scatter when approached. Once
you can capture them most of them will let you handle them.
· There is one 1 week old puppy and that puppy is now with Amy and
is doing well.
· Most of the Chows are two and under. There is a litter of 7 week
old puppies and a litter of 12 week old puppies.
· Amy pulled 18 more Chows all under 6 months of age and the 1 week
olds mother.
· The Chow coats are all dirty and will need to be groomed. Amy
groomed 4 today.
I will be traveling to Georgia on Friday night and will go to the kennel on
Saturday. Amy and I will be evaluating all the Chows and name them all. We
will pull more that day and decide where all of the Chows will be going.
We will need more foster homes so please contact me if you are interested in
fostering.
We did find out today that the kennel owner has informed the shelter that he
will no longer be feeding or giving water to the Chows since he signed them
over to the shelter. I can’t tell you how much this angered me. These
Chows need us so if anyone is in the area please contact the shelter to help
them out.
