Subject: Atlanta's Shelters In Crisis
SHELTER EMERGENCIES HAPPENING NOW
Dear Jamie,On the heels of a community-wide plea to find homes for the dogs living in our overcrowded shelters, the situations in both Fulton County and DeKalb County have sadly worsened. We are in DIRE need of 300 homes for dogs in our care and financial support to care for so many more.
Dogs housed at Fulton County Animal Services tested positive for Canine Flu after a previous outbreak this year. The animals that have been exposed to the flu now are getting worse and are not responding to treatment quickly. At this time, these shelters do not have space to properly isolate sick animals and recovering in the stressful shelter environment is a big challenge. Tragically, some dogs have passed away due to this illness, and we are working desperately to contain the flu and prevent more animals from dying.
At the same time, 31 medium and large dogs from a cruelty and suspected dog fighting case arrived at DeKalb County Animal Services. At the time of impoundment, the shelter only had space to house 11 of the 31 new dogs with 548 dogs already in their care. This has created even more of an emergency situation in terms of humane housing for these dogs and many others who have already been through so much.
We must find homes for 150 dogs at DeKalb County Animal Services, and 150 dogs from Fulton County Animal Services and the overflow LifeLine Midtown dogs, or we will have to euthanize due to a lack of space. Dog adoptions are currently free thanks to a generous donor and no appointment is needed to visit. We also supply fosters with everything they need to bring home a pet temporarily. The only way to save lives and help these dogs heal is by getting them out of the shelter and into a home.
Other Critical Needs:
- Donations: Given the need to provide care for nearly 1,100 dogs housed in our shelters, as well as treat many of them for Canine Flu, donations are needed today to support our efforts to save lives! Any amount will help. You can also send us much-needed items from our wishlists to any or all of our shelter locations.
- Reach new supporters: Follow us on social media via the icons at the bottom of this email, and share this message far and wide. Help us spread the word about the crises our shelters are facing!
We are exhausted and heartbroken at these devastating realities. But, we owe it to these innocent lives not to give up. Please join us in this fight.
Sincerely,
The Team at LifeLine Animal Project
