This site was designed to help you find the height above sea level of your current location, or any point on Earth. When viewed from a phone that supports altitude readings, the reading will come directly from your device altitude reading and will update automatically as you move. It will even work when your phone is offline. From a computer your elevation is loaded from our API based on your location.

An altimeter is an instrument used to measure altitude. Altitude is measured with an altimeter by calculating differences in atmospheric pressure. Inside of an altimeter is a barometer which is a device that measures pressure in the air. As you travel upwards, the pressure decreases which causes the bellows inside the barometer to expand. The bellows then give you an accurate reading of your height above sea level regardless of whether you are on the ground, in a tree, or in an airplane. Modern smartphones contain a barometer that can be used as an altimeter to measure elevation or to calculate the number of steps you have climbed.

The planet earth is extremely large and has radically diverse elevations. For example, the highest point on earth is Mt. Everest, which is about 29,000 feet above sea level. The lowest point on earth is the Mariana Trench in the Western Pacific, which is approximately 35,000 feet below sea level, which is close to seven miles deep! The location with the highest elevation in the United States is Denali in Alaska. The lowest point is the Badwater Basin, 281ft below sea level.

Using this website you can find out your elevation no matter where you are. How does this site determine your precise elevation? The site receives GPS data from your phone. This satellite technology is also used to determine your precise location and help you navigate in apps like Google Maps.

Using this site you can determine elevation for any location in the world, whether you are there or not. Simply enter an address anywhere in the world and you will be given its elevation in either feet or meters.

You can test this by entering the URL into your web browser (be sure to replace YOUR_API_KEY with your actual API key). The response includes the elevation at that point, in meters, along with the resolution value (the maximum distance between data points from which the elevation was interpolated, in meters).

The Elevation API developer guide is intended for website and mobile developers who want to use elevation data within maps provided by one of the Google Maps Platform APIs. It provides an introduction to using the API and reference material on the available parameters.

When you're hiking, you may be interested in knowing the highest elevation you'll be reaching. Psychologists use the term "mood elevation" to mean improvement in a patient's depression, and some leg ailments require elevation of the limb, usually so that it's higher than the heart for part of each day. Elevation can also mean "promotion;" thus, a vice president may be elevated to president, or a captain may be elevated to admiral.

altitude and elevation apply to height as measured by angular measurement or atmospheric pressure; altitude is preferable when referring to vertical distance above the surface of the earth or above sea level; elevation is used especially in reference to vertical height on land.

The BFE is the elevation that floodwaters are estimated to have a 1% chance of reaching or exceeding in any given year. The higher your lowest floor is above the BFE, the lower the risk of flooding. Lower risk typically means lower flood insurance premiums.

If you are unable to find an existing EC for your building, hire a licensed land surveyor, professional engineer, or certified architect who is authorized by law to certify elevation information. For a fee, these professionals can complete an EC for you.

If not, perhaps a plugin could do it. I would expect this kinda behavior:
1-You select something (all kind of things),
2-Click on the plugin SET Z,
3-Enter the elevation you need (in my case 0), then acadabra. everything goes flat as a pancake!

I am working on an application that requires the elevation at a given lat/long coordinate for lots of closely spaced coordinates along any given irregular path. (The path is a trace of a glider/hang-glider flight.)

There is also Google's elevation API (for use with their maps) but it has a usage limit of 2500 requests a day whereas my data can be tens of thousands of points. Plus querying a server so many times for closely spaced locations seems like a waste a bandwidth.

Coastal digital elevation models (DEMs) help researchers and decision makers understand and predict environmental changes that affect coastal regions. DEM data is used in a wide range of critical monitoring activities, including coastal process modeling (tsunami inundation, storm surge, sea-level rise, contaminant dispersal, etc.), ecosystem management, habitat research, coastal and marine spatial planning, hazard mitigation, and community preparedness.

The primary audience for this course is Land Surveyors and other licensed professionals who may be retained to produce an FEMA NFIP elevation certificate. The secondary audience for this course is floodplain management professionals.

The elevation attribute specifies the direction angle for the light source from the XY plane towards the Z-axis, in degrees. Note that the positive Z-axis points towards the viewer of the content.

Information on the form includes basic things like the owner's name, a legal description of the property, which flood zone the property is in, the base flood elevation (BFE), the elevation of the lowest floor and machinery supporting the building, and the stage of construction. This is very important, and there are three choices indicated on the elevation certificate that may be checked off. The first one is based on "construction drawings", the second is "building under construction", and the third is "finished construction". In the event of a flood and the need to collect on a flood insurance premium or disaster assistance, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and FEMA only recognize the "finished construction" certificate to be of value, since this certificate validates the actual elevation of a finished product. So this elevation certificate is what Pinal County requires as a condition of procuring a certificate of occupancy. The elevation certificate is the only "proof" that the home was set in accordance with the floodplain requirements.

Prior to a house being built in any unnumbered Zone A flood zone, Pinal County determines the base flood elevation for that particular site. The Flood Control District then uses this information to determine the regulatory elevation at which to set the lowest floor, or the bottom of the frame of a manufactured home. This information is transferred to the permit so the inspector knows how high the home has to be placed in order to be compliant. But at completion of the construction, a surveyor or engineer has to come back out to the property a second time to validate that this house has been set at the correct height at which time he would fill out the "final construction" elevation certificate.

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Elevation Certificate (EC) is an administrative tool used to provide elevation information necessary to ensure compliance with community floodplain management ordinances, to determine the proper insurance premium rate, or support a request for a Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA).
