I am at my wits end with this problem. This afternoon, I had a
functioning install of 6.5, and my CPC source setup correctly. I
noticed in my log files that Urchin was retrieving the CPC sources on
schedule and properly, then processing the reports when my profile
executed. Again, the CPC source is assigned to the correct profile,
its downloading and appears to ingest the CPC data source just fine.
Yet, I see absolutely *no CPC data* when I view the profile. I have
no CPC data whatsoever -- no structure, no program analysis. Nada.

Since then, I've updated to Urchin 6.602 and setup *everything* from
scratch. Still, I can see where the CPC reports are downloading,
being parsed but I have *zero* data to show for it.

I am using the UTM. I thought the Urchin UTM was smart enough to
detect Adwords clicks and store appropriate data?

What am I missing?

Many thanks!

Hi Brent,

Are you using dynamic keyword insertion in your destination URLs in
AdWords?

To the best of my knowledge, we are not. Our search marketing
consultant set up the campaign, and is using Clickable to track
results. We'd like to use Urchin on our end to further track the
users, as the UTM gives us the ability to view click paths, time on
site, etc.

Is dynamic keyword insertion a requirement? Is there a reason why a
search marketing consultant would *not* have the dynamic keyword
insertion enabled?

Many thanks.

Hi Brent,

If you check Scheduler -> CPC Download History, are all of the tasks
completing or do you see a lot of tasks ending in error?

The CPC download history appears to be healthy. Here is what I see
there for today (same message applies to all previous days):

++++++++++++++++++++++++
------------------------------------------------------
Urchin 6.602 (windows) starting: 20091202 02:01:10
------------------------------------------------------

[Wed Dec 02 02:01:10] Processing CPC logs 'RMC Adwords' (adwords) on
XXXX.rmc.edu

Worker 4368: Requesting data for 2009-12-01 - 2009-12-01
[Wed Dec 02 02:01:13] Job scheduled, ID: 1530298228. Rescheduling in
300 seconds.

[Wed Dec 02 02:06:19] CPC data downloaded. Units consumed: 503

++++++++++++++++++++++++

Interestingly, I see this at the bottom of the profile task history
for today. Is Urchin ignoring all of my CPC data?

++++++++++++++++++++++++
[05:41:40] Logfile: G:\Urchin\data\cpc\1\3\5a45733140.cpc
data lines: 0 (0%) (skipping 6336261 bytes)
data lines: 1267 (100%)
data hits: 1267
data proc: 485.60 KB in less than 1 second
data range: 2009-12-01 12:00 (-0800) - 2009-12-01 12:00 (-0800)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++

This happens again if I manually run the profile for my site, so it
doesn't appear to be a matter of the profile executing after the CPC
download.

Are you manually tagging your URLs with UTM parameters? In order for
Urchin to be able to correctly attributed impressions and clicks to
visit data, you need to either manually tag your URLs with UTM
parameters or use Master Codes. Autotagging alone will not do this for
you. Also, it's not recommended to both manually tag and autotag, so
if you're already autotagging for purposes of Google Analytics, you'll
probably need to go with Master Codes.

That is news to me, Jeremy. Where is the documentation about Master
Codes and autotagging?

Here is one URL from a search ad:

http://www.****************.edu/#Anchor?ctt_id=1111111&ctt_adnw=Google&ctt_kw={keyword}&ctt_ch=ps&ctt_entity=tc&ctt_adid={creative}&ctt_nwtype={ifsearch:search}{ifcontent:content}&ctt_cli=1x11111x11111x1111111

(Edit: Numbers have been changed; I didn't know if those were tied to
our accounts or not. Probably).

Above, I see some querystring variables included, but those might be
for our search consultant's Clickable tracking mechanism. This is
where the UTM codes belong? Can I append to this with Urchin's UTM
codes? Can the autotagging do this for me automatically?

From what I've read on this Master Coding principle, our URLs are
setup wrong. It seems the correct format would be

http://www.****************.edu/#Anchor?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=PPC&utm_campaign=PPC

Am I correct? I just need to plug in those three querystring
variables to each ad URL?

Many thanks!

Hi Brent,

Autotagging works for Google Analytics only as is incompatible with
Manual Tagging. If you aren't using Google Analytics, then Manual
Tagging is your best option. As far as the tags go, you should
probably also include utm_term={keyword} to get the best results. I'm
not entirely certain, however, if you'll be able to put these
parameters in the anchor text instead of the query string. It's
possible that Urchin will only recognize the parameters for cost
matching purposes if the parameters are in the query string.

If you do decide to put the UTM parameters in the anchor text, you
should definitely include the following line in your UTM code:

_uanchor=1;

this can go right before the urchinTracker(); call.

Master Codes are a bit different. Usually it's most appropriate to use
Master Codes when you're already autotagging for Google Analytics'
purposes and don't have the option of Manual Tagging. Here's the
documentation on Master Codes:

https://secure.urchin.com/helpwiki/en/How_To_Use_Master_Tracking_Codes

If you put the utm_id parameter in the anchor text, you'll need to
include the _uanchor=1; in UTM code as with Manual Tagging.
