National Workshop on Climate, Water and Energy Nexus – Identifying Gaps and Synergizing Knowledge
Deadline: 18 March 2014
Climate of Nepal is unpredictable due to its complex and diverse topography within very small spatial distribution. The climate change studies in Nepal have come up with a common conclusion that the temperature is increasing throughout the country but the rate is high in high altitudes, and the trend goes till 2100s and beyond. Precipitation pattern does not show any liner pattern but its extremes are increasing causing frequent floods and severe droughts. Nepal, being in the center of Himalayan region, is critical to regional water resources, with often heavy precipitation supplying river flow to extensive downstream reaches.
Hydropower and renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, forest and eco-tourism are the major sustainable development sectors in Nepal. Due to the changing nature of climate, change in snowfall timing and amount, the river runoff may change significantly in future. Prolonged dry season reduces the power potential due to water scarcity and heavy rainfall causes the problem of siltation and damage to infrastructures. Therefore, it is essential to understand the future climate and river runoff scenario for developing climate resilient hydropower and other water infrastructures. In this context, promotion of alternative energy is essential to mitigate the energy stresses.
In this context, Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC), Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), and The Small Earth Nepal (SEN) are jointly organizing a workshop ‘Climate, Water and Energy Nexus-Identifying Gaps and Synergizing Knowledge.’ The aim of the workshop is to explore and discuss the existing knowledge of the climate, its impacts on hydrology, and the status of hydropower, future scenarios of climate and river runoff and projection of energy demand in Nepal in the context of climate change. The target stakeholders are policy makers, researchers and academia, power companies, and other relevant stakeholders. We, therefore, request you to submit your relevant paper for the workshop.
Extended abstracts, keynote speeches, and panel discussions will be documented with a peer-reviewed proceedings, which will be edited by a panel of experts. The proceedings will be shared to key stakeholders in Nepal including university libraries.
Workshop Venue
Hotel Everest, New Baneshwor, Kathmandu, Nepal
