Call For Work
Boomtown:
New Art of the Southwest
Deadline for
accepting work is Tuesday, January 26, 2010
Opening
reception will be help from 6-8PM on Tuesday, February 2. Work will be
exhibited at ASU's Gallery 100 from February 1-12.
For more information contact: Alex Clauss at (480) 650-1861or email
alex....@asu.edu
Boomtown
is a juried
show to be held at ASU's Gallery 100, open to submissions from students and
faculty within the Herberger Institute, in addition to artists of any age in
the southwestern United States.
This show is both an acknowledgment of, and direct opponent to, what is
commonly identified as 'classical' southwestern art. Images of cowboys
and coyotes were at one time relevant to the Phoenix area, but in the 21st
century, these are few and far between. Using Gallery 100 as a vehicle
for communication, a select group of artists' works will express new ideas and
viewpoints on southwestern art. This exhibition is an homage to the
artistic boomtown that is the American Southwest.
Things to think about when submitting work:
-Is your work contrary to the cliches of the southwest?
-Does your work incorporate elements of the classical southwest and bring them
into a contemporary context?
-How does your work communicate your personal life here?
There is a
very broad range of topics and methods with which to approach this concept, and
varying viewpoints are encouraged. Artwork in ANY MEDIUM can be
submitted. There is no submission fee.
To submit work, please send JPEG(s) of your work, no larger than 1000 pixels
(width or height). If video documentation is available, feel free to send
that as well. Also include the Title, Medium, Dimensions, Date, and a
short description.

March 11-May 16, 2010
Free Reception: Thursday, March 11, 5:30-7:30pm
Tohono Chul Park is seeking submissions by artists from Arizona and the greater Southwest for Art That Heals, an exhibition of artwork that has a healing purpose. Original artwork in all media is welcome for Art That Heals. Possibilities include: mandalas, icons, shrines or other images used for mediation, prayer or healing; subjects dealing with prayer or intercessions to saints; artwork made in response to grief or to help the maker deal with a spiritual or psychological problem; and artwork that engenders or represents hope and healing. The exhibit’s aim is to explore how art images can be powerful objects that positively influence our spirits. For instance, icons and mandalas can be meditative aids, and art activities frequently are used in therapeutic settings to provide patients with a means of self expression and healing. Art making can be cathartic, helping individuals restore balance and health in their lives after experiencing loss, illness or suffering. A notebook placed in the exhibit will allow visitors to record their own experiences with the healing power of art.
Artists who wish to create new work for the Art That Heals exhibit may submit sketches and a narrative proposal outlining their ideas. Completed works may be submitted in slide, photo, or digital media/CD format. Submissions should include size, media, and an accompanying statement about each artwork and its relevance to the theme. No fee required for submissions. Each artist may submit up to six pieces for consideration.
