Hello Carol,
Thank you for the photograph. Lovely.
We have been reaching out to many different people (potential community partners) of many different sorts throughout Southern California. We are trying to prioritize people and organizations and small businesses closer to us, but your community is pretty unique and I don't think anything like that exists closer. We are working very hard to get a variety of perspectives from people with experiences in all different facets related to sustainable food systems. It was wonderful to get your input and perspectives on so many areas.
We will be in touch again soon!
Thanks,
Becky
Hi all, I found myself smiling a lot after our time together. The interest you demonstrated In exploring various facets of living more sustainably was encouraging to me.This morning I listened to a few episodes of a podcast, “ What if we get it right”, hosted by Dr Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, Marine biologist. Their dialogues with people in Science, business, Government include A holistic overview and pertinent details That may speak to some of the questions you seem to have about the roles of technology And suggestions for individual participation.Re: Your offer to bring other students here to Help out here is of course welcome, and, I wonder what it would be like to look at that through the lens Of sustainability: what is the best use of energy For what you want to achieve. When I was transitioning from Illness carenursing to holistic healthcare I had to drive six hours round-trip for The nearest trainings.(In the dark ages before computers and cell phones). Eventually I established the first holistic healthcare Center in Connecticut and help promote those Approaches locally.Since collaboration is Part of your program I wonder how you could achieve that locally. If you listen to the podcast, you will get a sense of how many disciplines need to be involved To live our lives more sustainablY. I wonder what it might be like to reach out to other disciplines on your campus or nearby schools to establish allies And do outreach in the community.Whatever you do, make it Enjoyable. Food and fun attract more people.I forgot to comment on the solar clothes dryer so I’ve attached a photo.Feel free to reach out with any questions comments stuff you’re thinking about .

Hi Carol,
I'm so sorry that you aren't feeling well. It is fine with me to play it by ear for now and hope that you are better, and also fine to postpone if that works better for you. I believe you said that next weekend (Oct 11) is already scheduled with something else for you, and I see that Oct. 18 is the next No Kings Day. Perhaps I could attend a No Kings Day event in Los Angeles if that is a good day for you to give us the tour, or October 25 also works for me.Hope you feel better quickly!
Thanks,

It turns out that we may have more people than I thought. We will either have 4 if that is ok with you. Would it be ok to bring an eggplant salad made with eggplant from my gardens? I think that can go with whatever you have planned. I'm also excited to try a new fruit. Love trying new things.
I will bring some minty iced tea and pomegranate lemonade using mostly ingredients from our gardens, and plenty of both to share.
Thanks,

Hi Carol,
That's very kind! I'm pretty sure it's just me and Katie though there is one other person that I invited and haven't heard back from.
I try not to eat wheat but it isn't an actual allergy, and I don't really like tofu. I'll let Katie answer for herself.
What can I bring to contribute to the meal?
Thanks,

Hello Carol,
We still have to check a couple of things, but I think we could be there around 11, or 11:30 at the latest, on October 4. I expect it will take us 2 or 2 1/2 hours to get there from my house. But we can also message you once we know what the traffic looks like to give you a more exact time. My cell phone number is (909) 846-6625 if you need to reach us in route.
We will confirm for certain in the next few days, but didn't want to keep you waiting too long to save some time for us, if that still works for you.
Thanks,

Hello Becky,I have commitments for October 11 so October 4 is better for me. Do you know what time you plan to arrive?Saturday usually starts off with a trashy social hour that people drift into between nine and 9:30 AM. Attendance ranges from 1-6 people. We take shopping carts around our neighborhood to Pick up trash from the streets And socialize with each other and sometimes the neighbors.I would be able to give you a tour after that, 10:30 AM-11:30.Since most people are out and about on a Saturday, my suggestion is to let people know When you will be available and ask them to sign up to talk with you.
LMK what you think.

Both Katie and I are available on October 4 or October 11. If those aren't good for you & your community, we might be able to make a Friday work. Please let us know.

Hello Carol,
Thank you for getting back to me. I have looked at the intentional communities website, and there isn't a lot in this area. And we are pretty excited about the specific things you are doing and the idea of an urban ecovillage.
Thank you for forwarding our request to the rest of the community. I hope we can devise a way to work together.
One thing we could do with you if you and your group are open to it, based on your suggestion of a virtual tour, is that our team could have someone visit and record you showing them around, maybe talk to a few of the people there, and create a short video/podcast that way. That might be an exciting way for us to get a better sense of what you do and whether there would be future opportunities, while initially contributing footage that we can edit into a short informational video. If you like this idea, we would arrange a time that works well for you, and one or two of us would drive out there. We would take some video clips during the tour and maybe ask you some questions. If there are others around who are willing to share some of their experiences with us, that would be great too. Then we would edit the clips into a short, informative video and send it to you and your group for suggestions and approval before using it for anything. Once we have a final approved version, we would use it for whichever of these uses you and your group approve: post on our website, show to classes and groups of students, post as homework for students to watch. And of course you could use it for anything that you want, also.
What do you think?
Thanks,

Hello Becky, I really appreciate The enthusiasm and ideas that you have expressed To help your student and stay more aware Our projects for more sustainable and cooperative living experiences. We are a multigenerational community and try to accommodate age related knee. I am 82 years old and I have to Carefully schedule all Commitments .Most of what you have suggested sounds too ambitious for me so I will forward your request for the rest of the community to see if anyone Else can help you.The one I had for connecting with you and your students as may be doing a virtual tour using a cell phone. I really don’t know how that would work but maybe you do if it’s of interest to you you can let me knowI wonder if you have consulted the intentional communities directory to see if there are projects closer to where you areTake care and I wish you well with your teaching projects.

Hello Carol,
Thanks for your email. I am very excited about the possibility of working with you. My greatest interest is that I think it would be fantastic for our students to learn about an example of a group of people who are striving to live sustainably, including growing and procuring sustainably produced food. We would benefit greatly from hearing about your successes, lessons learned, and also what challenges you still face. One idea that I had is that it would be fantastic if someone from your group would be willing to come to our final exam period to give the students feedback about their presentations, and also share your experiences with us.
In the spring semester, we will have a seminar, in which we hope to have guest presentations as well as journal club type sessions. If someone wanted to give a guest presentation, in person or via zoom or webinar, that would be great. Another aspect that we've talked about for the seminar is to look into topics that would help our community partners. So if there is something we can find out about or brainstorm that might help you overcome one of your challenges, that might also be an appropriate topic.
Looking forward, I'm hoping that one or both of these courses will have several field trips. I don't think we can have required field trips this semester, but we could have optional ones, and if we have specific places in mind ahead of time, we might be able to require them as part of the course in the future.
Starting next year, we will have students doing internships in the community. While your EcoVillage is probably too far for most of our students to commute regularly, we do sometimes have students who live farther away and might be interested, or they maybe able to help with something that doesn't always require them to be there, like working with your online presence or something else that would be helpful to you.
And we are always open to other ideas about how we can collaborate with people and organizations in the community. So if you have ideas or needs that we can help with, we'd love to do that.
Katie and I would both be very happy to discuss these and other ideas with you. Please let us know if you'd like to set up a meeting, if any of these ideas appeal to you, or if you have other ideas of ways we can work together.
Thanks,
Becky
