Hello, fellow
gardeners,
It seems
essential to share brief note regarding vigilance about
pests and diseases:
Remember to
observe any plant or fruit quarantines active in your
area when sharing fruits/veggies, cuttings/scions, or
plants.
- Most of Southern California is
under citrus quarantine regarding
the Asian citrus psyllid and huanglongbing
(citrus greening disease), so don't
transport plants, cuttings, or anything aside from
(washed, leafless) fruits of citrus and their close
relatives. See https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/citrus/pests_diseases/hlb/regulation.html
- A zone surrounding Santa
Clarita is under quarantine for the Tau fruit
fly. See https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/plant/PDEP/target_pest_disease_profiles/tau_ff_profile.html
for details and a map.
- Queensland fruit fly
is now near Thousand Oaks and the 23 freeway. See https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/plant/PDEP/target_pest_disease_profiles/qff_profile.html
and scroll down to the Treatment Maps links to
download information on quarantine, treatment, and
maps.
- Three locations in
northern/central California and a large zone in
Riverside and San Bernardino Counties is now under
fruit quarantine for the Oriental fruit fly.
Unprocessed/uncut fruits may not be moved within or
out of the zone. Details are at https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/plant/PDEP/treatment/oriental_ff.html.
This is a rapidly expanding quarantine zone, and the
CDFA is starting treatment in various areas including
Redlands.
- The black fig fly
is destroying figs, particularly unripe ones, so
infested figs must be destroyed (NOT composted, not
thrown into yard waste, and not into the trash unless
double-bagged). As with many other fruit flies, the
larvae pupate in the ground. Download a PDF file
within information from https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/countyag/postings/files/Wilson_et_al_-_P.pdf.
