Around fifty people have been taking a very active role in the first day today of our meeting at the Imperial College in London.  The four teams on te Adaptive City, the Personalised City, the Supportive City, and Perceptions of Quality of Life have worked on defining the scope of their themes and a number of scenarios.  Naturally they have found that these themes are very broad and it is a challenge to narrow down the number of scenarios illustrating each theme.  So I will not attempt tonight to summarise everything that we have discussed today.  But here is a list of keywords that capture some of the essence:

changing city governance model
social empowerment
transparency
disruptive change
privacy
security / natirual environment
security / cyber
passive / active interaction with the city
demographic diversity
community focus on vibrant High Street
anarchic interaction with the city
industrial service model / distributed service model
behaviour incentives - social norms/gaming/financial/regulatory
self-learning systems for home management
level of individual concerns
inevitability of Internet of Things
socio-economic models of data ownership
a simple life

We have also had several excellent panels of talks from UK researchers and practitioners and the day ended with a great talk by Peter Madden on the launch of the Future Cities Catapult, an innovation centre anchored in London.  The video for all the plenary sessions has been captured and will be available RSN in unedited form on Livestream and later in the form of short segments on YouTube.  The presentations will also be available on the USC Web site.

Regards, colin

Dear colleagues:  After some delay, we received the streamed video from the Imperial college meeting on 10-11 September 2013.  I have roughly edited this into sections that match the agenda items and sent them off to live with the USCYouTube channel.  I have also added links to the meeting agenda for each video, typically labelled "Talk Video".

The files we received do not include the first 90 minutes of so of the meeting, which I regret as it included a couple of good sessions.  However it appears that the streaming recording still exists and we hope to receive these files in due course.  I will then add them to the YouTube channel.

I have worked on a point of view document based on this meeting and hope to fininsh a draft by the end of January 2014.

With my best wishes to all for a happy and healthy New Year, colin

PS I am hoping to also load video from the 2011 New York and 2012 Berkeley meetings in someehat the same manner.  Stay tuned.
