The $16 million ReDDDoT program invites proposals from multidisciplinary, multi-sector teams that examine and demonstrate the principles, methodologies, implementations, and impacts associated with responsible design, development, and deployment of technologies in practice, focusing especially on AI, biotechnology and climate/natural disasters. The program seeks to support cross-cutting project teams that span sectors such as academia, non-profits, industry, and government, and all such organizations may apply.  Further details about the program, including funding, project types, and due dates are below and at the program web site: https://new.nsf.gov/funding/opportunities/responsible-design-development-deployment.

The program is a collaboration of the National Science Foundation with Ford Foundation, The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, Pivotal Ventures, The Eric and Wendy Schmidt Fund for Strategic Innovation, and Siegel Family Endowment.

We hope that experts and stakeholders from across the U.S. will engage with this opportunity, and we encourage you to apply if interested. We would also be grateful for your support in amplifying this opportunity to individuals and organizations you think might be interested. To that end, you can forward this email, and we’ve developed sample social posts and newsletter blurbs for your use or adaptation.

About the Responsible Design, Development, and Deployment of Technologies (ReDDDoT) Program

Program Name: Responsible Design, Development, and Deployment of Technologies (ReDDDoT) Program Web Site: https://new.nsf.gov/funding/opportunities/responsible-design-development-deployment

Program Leadership: The program is a collaboration between the National Science Foundation (NSF) and philanthropic funders: Ford Foundation, The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, Pivotal Ventures, The Eric and Wendy Schmidt Fund for Strategic Innovation, and Siegel Family Endowment.

Program Purpose: The ReDDDoT program invites proposals from multidisciplinary, multi-sector teams that examine and demonstrate the principles, methodologies, implementations, and impacts associated with responsible design, development, and deployment of technologies in practice. The program aims to ensure that ethical, legal, and societal considerations and community values are embedded across technology lifecycles to accelerate pathways to societal and economic benefits while developing strategies to avoid or mitigate societal and economic harms.

Priority Technology Areas: (1) Artificial intelligence, (2) biotechnology, and (3) natural and anthropogenic disaster prevention or mitigation including, but not limited to, climate change mitigation and environmental sustainability.

Activities Supported: Projects may carry out a variety of activities that contribute to building capacity in responsible design, development, and deployment of technologies, including research, implementation, methodologies and tools, and infrastructure for education and stakeholder engagement. Funding is also available for planning grants to prepare for future project proposals, workshops, and coordination networks. Projects, planning grants, and coordination networks must include work in one or more of the priority areas, while workshops can be on any topic related to responsible tech.

Eligible Organizations: The program seeks to support cross-cutting project teams that span sectors such as academia, industry, state, local, and tribal governments, and non-profit and community organizations, and all such organizations may apply.

Funding Available: The total program is anticipated to distribute $16 million. Proposals for projects may request up to $1.5 million over three years, with smaller awards for the planning grants, workshops, and coordination networks.

Due Dates: Proposals for Planning Grants, Translational Research Coordination Networks, and Workshops are due April 8, 2024, and proposals for full projects are due April 22, 2024.

Learn More: Review full program guidelines and learn how to submit a proposal in the solicitation, available from: https://new.nsf.gov/funding/opportunities/responsible-design-development-deployment.

Program contacts, and related events, such as office hours or informational webinars, will be posted at this site.
