(mosses, ferns, grasses, herbaceous perennials, woody shrubs, trees, and
vines) and talk about life cycles (annuals, biennials, and perennials,
pollination, seed dispersal, and other seasonal changes). We'll use some
sample plants to illustrate different flower structures, leaf shapes,
and leaf arrangements. This will lead into Newcomb's plant keying
system. Later we'll go outside and identify plants in the field. Once

Herbal Energetics, Mountain Roots, and More
with Mimi Hernandez MS, RH (AHG)
May 18 - 9:00am 5:00pm
May 19 - 9:00am-3:00pm
Herbal Energetics, Taste and Understand
Every herbalist should begin with an understanding of taste and activity. You can tell a lot about what an herb does both
physically and energetically based on the way it tastes and feels in
your mouth. What does astringent taste like? How does that tightening
feeling lead to healing? What about herbs with an aromatic flavor, what
do they all tend to have in common? We will
learn how that bitter taste gets the juices flowing, the sour herbs can
be awakening, and the spicy herbs, of course have a lot to tell
us!
Mountain Roots! - Discover the
lore, tradition, and science behind Appalachia's most popular and native
medicinal roots, from the well known and economically exalted roots of
the culture like Ginseng and Black Cohosh to the local secret favorites
like Yellowroot and Stoneroot and many more! Come away with tidbits on
Appalachian culture past, present, and future and its contribution to
our herbal materia medica.
