The CIC National Capital Branch presents its first speaker event of the new season
MEXICO, CANADA, NAFTA AND BEYOND, WITH MEXICAN AMBASSADOR TO CANADA, DIONISIO PÉREZ-JÁCOME

As discussion on the 'modernization' of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) ramps up, with negotiations now getting underway with the United States and Mexico, Ambassador Dionisio Pérez-Jácome will help shed light on what’s at stake, the risks and opportunities, along with other strategic elements of the Canada-Mexico relationship.
Mexico is Canada’s valued partner, not only in NAFTA but also in APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation), G20 grouping of major economies, OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and the United Nations. Together we work to counter transnational crime through the 190-member Interpol and other organizations. Nearly 2 million Canadian 'snowbirds' and others visit Mexico annually, and about 50,000 Canadians live there.
H.E. Dionisio Pérez-Jácome has previously served as Under Secretary in Mexico’s Ministry of Finance, Secretary of Communications and Transport, and most recently as Ambassador to the OECD in Paris. Although Ambassador to Canada just since June, Canada is familiar to Ambassador Pérez-Jácome, as he also participated in the NAFTA negotiations that concluded in 1994 while he was serving as Agriculture and Forestry Counsellor. He is an alumnus of the prestigious Instituto Technológico Autónomo de México (ITAM), with both an undergraduate degree in Economics and a Master's degree in Public Administration. He also holds a Master's degree from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.

Au fur et à mesure que les discussions au sujet de la « modernisation » de l'Accord de libre-échange nord-américain (ALENA) s’intensifient, avec des négociations en cours avec les États-Unis et le Mexique, l'Ambassadeur Dionisio Pérez-Jácome contribuera à faire la lumière sur ce qui est en jeu, les risques et les opportunités, ainsi que sur d'autres éléments stratégiques de la relation entre le Canada et le Mexique.
Le Mexique est le partenaire privilégié du Canada, non seulement dans l'ALENA, mais aussi dans l'APEC (Coopération économique Asie-Pacifique), le G20 qui regroupe les principales économies, l'OCDE (Organisation pour la coopération et le développement économiques) et les Nations Unies. Ensemble, nous travaillons à contrer la criminalité transnationale à travers les 190 membres d'Interpol et d'autres organisations. Près de 2 millions de « snowbirds » canadiens et d'autres personnes visitent le Mexique chaque année, et environ 50 000 Canadiens y vivent.
S.E. Dionisio Pérez-Jácome a précédemment occupé les fonctions de sous-secrétaire au ministère des Finances du Mexique, de secrétaire aux communications et aux transports, et plus récemment d’ambassadeur à l'OCDE à Paris. Bien qu’ambassadeur auprès du Canada depuis seulement le mois de juin, le Canada connait bien l'ambassadeur Pérez-Jácome, puisque ce dernier a également participé aux négociations de l'ALENA conclues en 1994 alors qu'il servait de conseiller en agriculture et foresterie. Ancien élève du prestigieux Instituto Technológico Autónomo de México (ITAM), il détient un baccalauréat en économie et une maîtrise en administration publique. Il détient également une maîtrise de la Kennedy School of Government de Harvard.
