Call your Representative today in support of Obama's Mid-East Envoy pick with our easy-to-use call-in tool.
Aimee --
America is back - meaningfully engaged once again in Middle East peacemaking.
That's the message President Obama sent by appointing Senator George Mitchell - the successful broker of peace in Northern Ireland - as his Middle East Peace Envoy.
The President's message didn't please everyone, however. One prominent Jewish community leader objected to Mitchell because he would be too "fair." [1] Right-wing Christian Zionist Gary Bauer said Mitchell is too "even-handed." [2]
This is a critical moment to show the world that Mitchell's friends far outnumber his critics. That's why 32 Members of Congress, led by William Delahunt of Massachusetts, introduced a Resolution yesterday supporting Senator Mitchell and his mission. Will you take just 2 minutes to call and ask your Representative to co-sponsor House Resolution 130 supporting Mitchell's mission?
Mitchell's enormous job has just begun. First, he aims to cement the tenuous Gaza ceasefire, and second, to get the negotiating process back on track to resolve the underlying conflict.
Mitchell's credibility and success at the negotiating table may well depend on perceptions of the political support he has in the United States.
President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton's press conference to announce Mitchell's appointment just days after the inauguration was a great endorsement of Mitchell and his mission. That message was heard in capitals around the world.
Foreign policy experts and leadership recognize President Obama's bold new move as exactly what the region needs.
The pro-Israel, pro-peace community is vigorously supporting Mitchell's appointment. We've issued public statements in support of the appointment to the media and asked people like you to send thank you messages to President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for their powerful choice. J Street members like you sent 13,780 thank you messages. Allied organizations such as the Religious Action Center for Reform Judaism, Americans for Peace Now, Israel Policy Forum, Brit Tzedek v' Shalom, Churches
for Middle East Peace, and the Arab American Institute have actively supported Mitchell's nomination and are also actively supporting this Resolution.
Now, it's the House of Representatives' turn to show their support. This is why we started J Street - so we could mobilize thousands of calls in a matter of hours to show support for Middle East peacemaking in the halls of power. Will you join us?
Senator George Mitchell has invaluable experience from his successful work in Northern Ireland that he brings to bear on the conflict in the Middle East.
Drawing on that experience, he had this to say while in the region on a recent trip:
"For those of you in the Middle East who are discouraged, I understand your feelings. But from my experience in Northern Ireland I formed the conviction that there is no such thing as a conflict that can't be ended. Conflicts are created and conducted by human beings. They can be ended by human beings. I saw it happen in Northern Ireland although admittedly it took a very long time. I believe deeply that with c
ommitted, persevering and active diplomacy it can happen in the Middle East."
Mitchell is the right man for the job. Let's make sure he's got the support he needs to do his job well. I hope you'll join me in calling your Representative today.
Thank you.
