User-programmable LEDs (4), buttons (2) and switches (2) are available to easily give input and get output. The nRF9160 DK has both a 4FF SIM card slot and an MFF2 SIM footprint, to support both plug-in and soldered (e)SIMs. It is bundled with a eSIM card from iBasis preloaded with 10 MB.
Programming and debugging is enabled through the Segger J-Link OB, which also supports external targets. The nRF9160 DK is supported by a full suite of development software and tools. All free to download and use commercially.

Now comes the question what is wrong with i2c, why I did not see any current drop when i2c is in sleep mode? Could it be a hardware issue? Currently I don't have second DK but its ordered and on its way. I'll test this whenever I get my hands on it. But maybe its something else I missed?
2) Another cause could be the GPIO configuration, for example that there is a pull-up on some of the lines and that it is pulled down externally. In order to investigate this further you could read out the GPIO registers to see if everything is as expected(nrfjprog --memrd ). TWI typically has a pull-up on SDA and SCL, and perhaps this is removed when suspending. This could lead to floating lines and a target(slave) drawing excessive current.
About the original issue. The slave device was powered from nRF9160-DK (5V and GND on P1). It turns out that 5V is 0V when powered externally and I only noticed this when I connected Salae to SDA and SCL and did not understand why the lines are pulled low instead of high. I connected the + to VDD and now everything works as expected. I guess the slave device was draining SDA and SCL trying to source itself while on VIN there were no voltage.
It was my fault that I didn't check DK schematic were it is obvious that 5V is only available when USB is connected. Anyway, thank you for your help, the problem is solved now and I can move on with next steps!

GS-9160 is a novel and potent inhibitor of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) integrase (IN) that specifically targets the process of strand transfer. It is an authentic inhibitor of HIV-1 integration, since treatment of infected cells results in an elevation of two-long terminal repeat circles and a decrease of integration junctions. GS-9160 has potent and selective antiviral activity in primary human T lymphocytes producing a 50% effective concentration (EC(50)) of approximately 2 nM, with a selectivity index (50% cytotoxic concentration/EC(50)) of approximately 2,000. The antiviral potency of GS-9160 decreased by 6- to 10-fold in the presence of human serum. The antiviral activity of GS-9160 is synergistic in combination with representatives from three different classes of antiviral drugs, namely HIV-1 protease inhibitors, nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, and nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors. Viral resistance selections performed with GS-9160 yielded a novel pattern of mutations within the catalytic core domain of IN; E92V emerged initially, followed by L74M. While E92V as a single mutant conferred 12-fold resistance against GS-9160, L74M had no effect as a single mutant. Together, these mutations conferred 67-fold resistance to GS-9160, indicating that L74M may potentiate the resistance caused by E92V. The pharmacokinetic profile of GS-9160 in healthy human volunteers revealed that once-daily dosing was not likely to achieve antiviral efficacy; hence, the clinical development of this compound was discontinued.
