Dear dedicated gardener or interested environmentalist,
A gracious donation of 21 worm bins (with worms) has been donated to the Greenville County Soil and Water Conservation District. We are pleased to be able to offer these bins to you for FREE on a first come, first served basis!
Worm bins are also called vermicomposting. It’s a way to compost that can be done indoors or in a garage or basement, and it provides compost with a naturally high, completely organic nutrient content. A simple regular addition of newspaper and kitchen waste leads to a steady supply of a rich, nutritious soil amendment.
Here’s a link for further information on vermicomposting:
http://www.cityfarmer.org/wormcomp61.html
A pound of worms currently costs about $25 online and the container costs about $8, so this is a real deal!!!
The bins do not currently have lids, so some sort of lid (could be just a piece of wood laid on top or a plastic bag bungee corded around the lip) will need to be fashioned if you plan to turn the lights off where you keep the worms. Also, two rows of 1/16’’ diameter holes need to be drilled at 1 inch spacing around the top of the plastic bins for ventilation. These holes can be drilled while the worms are in the bins.
I’ll be happy to supply you with information and technical advice on feeding and vermicompost harvesting if you are interested.
If you are interested in obtaining a bin, please call me at the number below, or email me at kirob...@greenvillecounty.org. Act quickly because there is a limited supply. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Kirsten
