Does anyone know if chocolate mint coleus is edible?  I bought a plant today and after looking up online I'm a bit confused.  Some sites say yes, others no.  It has dark chocolate looking leaves with green edging around the leaves.  Thanks, Tina

I am curious, too, if any colueus is edible, especially since some natural health supplements name coleus.  i have been trying to find out for some time if that is the same coleus.  It has a square stem, too, like the mint family.  Sure hope someone finds the answer and shares.
PS: I have chocolate mint mint.

I don't know about the chocolate mint version, but I've eaten Cuban
oregano which is supposed to be a coleus... or perhaps used to be a
coleus until the splitters renamed it:

Also, I replied on the vole question that you can pour used kitty litter
down the holes to get voles to move away.

I'm behind on setting some of you to receive "Daily Digest" emails but
I'll try to get to it soon.

Sure, Tina.
Would you be at Whole Foods any time between 4 and 7 today?  I could leave it at the Upstate Locally Grown/ Screamin'Good booth at the back of the Whole Foods Parking Lot...or if you can get it Wednesday, it would be at the service desk, Whole Foods.

Would you be willing to share a piece of your chocolate mint that I might try rooting it?  If so, great.  If not, that's OK too :-)  ~Tina

Yes, I have a Cuban Oregano plant, too, and I remember reading that it really is a coleus now that you mention it.  It has siliar leaf edges as coleus, square stems, and the leaves are thick and slightly fuzzy.  It does smell of Oregano, which is also in the mint family, isn't it?

Looks like coleus is in the mint family, and yes oregano is in the mint
family, too.

So...is coleus edible, Eliza?  I would guess it is, from all the evidence...Have you found anything onfirming it?

I don't know, if you run a search for "edible coleus" you'll find a lot,
but there are so many species of coleus that I personally wouldn't want
to experiment much. There may be some that are edible in more of a
medicinal way -- meaning that if you consume too much you'll be treated
to well-cleaned intestines or something equally startling. ;)

I think everyone who asked to be on Daily Digest has been updated now.
If anyone else would prefer to receive all of the gardener emails in a
single daily digest message let me know.
