Hello, I live in SC but 2 miles from the Charlotte border.

I have a hibiscus that I think grows way too high (9 feet or so). It
ends up having scraggly leaves.

My question is:

In the springtime when it's starting to come up, can I trim the
branches and "force" it not to grow so high but rather bush out with
better leaves?

Thanks

JOJO

Yes, I think that would work. I would pinch the tops off of the stems
when it reaches about 1' in height, and possibly again when it reaches
2'. That will force the lower stems to be thicker and more supportive
and for it to grow a bushier habit. I do this with my okra and with my
tea hibiscus, which is in the same family, and it works very well.

Did you want us to add you to this email list? Any upper South Carolina
gardeners are welcome!

When I lived in Florida, we always pinched the tips of the regular tropical hibiscus, then pruned the woody branches to shape.  They respond by becoming full, rounded, and bushy.
