Hey Larry Bunner...I've said I'd get this to you, but I've been slacking...actually I was not sure how to present this...but just decided to do something rather than sitting on it further.
Jim Keller and others gave a bunch of ideas on flying meteorology...
I've been absorbing info and trying to process it from multiple mentors...not sure I'm on the right track yet, but it pissed me off to the point of action when the government took down the Skew-T info we were using. So I went full in on BUFKIT! So interestingly Will Perez and I had previously made contact with a Meteorologist named Travis who was up there taking pictures at Hyner just on his vacation.
Will Perez and I chatted with Travis about this program called BUFKIT for looking at Skew-T and atmosphere profiles, wind, temperature and dewpoint, cloudbase etc.
Well once the government quit our access to the interactive Skew-T I thought I'd explore BUFKIT more as a work around.
Here is some explanation of what I've been up to, and a video of the flights on that day. We flew at Harris Hill.
Video:
Soon I'll make a video of the mechanics of setting up BUFKIT on your computer and getting the data for it to chew on...stay tuned for that, coming soon.
So in 2025 I have a goal to have an efficient quick study of flying weather the day of the flight then correlate our actual flight experience that day with the data from the forecast...and have some videos/ flight data to back up what we found on site. I'm calling it SKY STUDY...
Sounds a bit geeky, but it is kind of interesting if it can be done efficiently and not distract from the flying and just use the learning going forward to spot great flying days!
My thinking has went full circle...for a while I was on weather study, then for a period I ignored it and just looked at a local Weather Unground forecast. Now I'm back to being a bit more scientific...go figure???
Hope you enjoy the video...if "enjoy" is the word for it!
Happy flying in 2025!
