Hello,

A quick look at Weather Underground...and it looks like Thursday could be good at Harris Hill.  Forecast showed 9-10mph NW surface forecast most of the day...

I'm interested in getting out flying if the forecast holds.

Anybody interested?

I plan to be there if the conditions are good.

Hi,
Loaded up my glider this evening between bouts of T-storm...as I was tying it down outside the barn it started to wickedly pour down rain again, quickly drove in the barn for cover...is that a good omen for Thursday?

I'm trying to get up there around 12:30.

Weather Underground screen shot attached.

Cheers,

Aron,
I'll check the updated forecast in the morning and see which model is closest to actual conditions of a few hours at the Gliderport. I'll then make a decision about making the trip to Harris. Please post your ETA when you have an idea of when it will be.
Thanks.

Need some ideas for front and rear supports for this hang glider. I’m not worried about the steel bumpers.

Hmmm. I'm not a HG pilot.  I fly a PG, so I don't have anything to offer here. Perhaps you accidentally sent this to me. Perhaps HG pilots in the RAF, FSF, and Hyner will chime in.

All I can think of is something similar to one of those steering wheel protectors. Something with a U on both sides that's adjustable.

Some people use these hood / trunk tie downs

I use a truck cab extender on my honda accord with a 1 ¼ to 2 inch hitch adaptor and a ladder and swim noodles for padding – see attached picture

It's looking too strong for PG flying at Harris today for me. I'll have to continue waiting for decent conditions.

Bruce, if you can spend a few $$ you could talk to John Heiney, the master HG pilot, who makes custom HG racks for different cars.  My sense is he'll have a good solution already, or will work one up for you.

You do want at least three, preferably four (roof rack, front and rear bumpers) support points. I bought a 2005 Volvo XC70 because it had a long roof. I bought two aerodynamic crossbars for the factory-installed rails. And a $20 suction cup handle from Amazon. I chopped up an old Atlas aerodynamic tubing kingpost to make two compression struts to support the front part of the telescoping ladder.  In hindsight, any old used 14-16' stiff ladder would have been a lot less hassle.  But I don't have a garage at my home so needed something I could break down.
Anyway, here's the rig, hope it gives you some insights.
Oh, there's also a slot in the front bumper of my Volvo that you can screw an eyebolt into that. Not sure your Merc has that. But those hood straps are a great idea, I just ordered some because it's a better solution than what I'm using now.
The main thing is add support beyond the short roof rack potential you have, or you'll toast your glider in record time from having it flex up and down on the road.
Good luck!
Photos to follow this, I don't have them available on this desktop.

This websight seems messed up, won't open the photos I just pasted into that last message. Is there a size limit? They're straight off  my phone.

I have seen a few folks with half of a aluminum extension ladder attached to the roof rack.  (extend the ladder until it  comes apart)  The ladder-half is tied to the bumpers.  The rope/tie-down is secured to the bumper ends to make a triangle to keep the ladder from pivoting.  Pad the rungs and remove any sharp edges on the ends.

There are usually some used ones for sale on Facebook marketplace.

I'm just about out the door to Harris...

Sky looks nice here in PA...
