Dear Upstate Locavores,
As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, we are fortunate to have access to a bounty of autumn produce, including squashes, apples and turkeys. We'd like to pass along information about two special opportunities to enjoy and celebrate locally-produced food! We hope you are able to participate in one or both of these events!
Gobble, gobble: The Clemson Poultry Science Club is now taking orders for fresh-dressed, free-range, drug-free turkeys. Turkeys are $60, cash and check accepted. Because of popular demand, turkeys must be pre-ordered by Nov. 15.Students will process the turkeys on Nov. 19 and bag them on Nov. 20. The birds will be ready for sale Nov. 21-22 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. in the lobby of Newman Hall. Money raised by the project will go toward activities for club members, such as traveling to the International Poultry Exposition in Atlanta. To order a turkey or for more information, contact Mickey Hall at 656-4022 ormah...@clemson.edu.
Slow Food Clemson University Celebrates the Distinctive Tastes and Botanical Beauty of Heirloom Apples
Slow Food Clemson University would like to invite the Clemson community to celebrate the initial planting of 20 heirloom apple trees to the Botanical Gardens and the Clemson University Student Organic Farm. The apple tree planting ceremony is free to the public and will be held at the Clemson University Student Organic Farm on Sunday, November 20th, 2011 at 2pm. Our honored guest will be Creighton Lee Calhoun, one of the last surviving members of the Clemson family, a notable expert on heirloom apple trees, and author of Old Southern Apples.
Slow Food Clemson University will also host a cocktail
hour at Sleepy Hollow Bed and Breakfast on Sunday, November 20th,
2011 at 4pm. Tickets for the event are 40 dollars, and admission includes
open bar and heavy hor d’oeuvres. If you would like to purchase tickets
to the cocktail hour, please visit our website: http://www.slowfoodcu.com/.
The cocktail hour will highlight the flavors of various varieties of apples and
include local ingredients from Upstate producers. During the cocktail hour,
a silent auction of apple inspired art will take place starting at 4pm.
