Thanksgiving…in June!

Dear Upstate Locavores,

Now that the farmers’ market is in full swing, we hope you have enjoyed visiting with local farmers and purchasing locally grown produce available throughout the Upstate.  There are multiple opportunities to support your local farmers and enjoy healthy, fresh food!

One particularly unique opportunity is available through the Clemson Area Food Exchange (CAFÉ) (http://cafe.locallygrown.net). Some of you may have attended the Upstate Locavores “Getting to Know Your Farmer” potluck that featured local meat, egg and dairy farmers.  At that time, several people expressed interest in heritage-breed turkeys.  This week, you can purchase a heritage-breed turkey, raised at Glory Ranch Farm.

According to the Glory Ranch: “this is the ultimate holiday turkey. They will be free ranged and supplemented with non-gmo grain. They require 20 weeks to raise out. Dressed weight ranges between 12 and 23 lbs. The American Bronze turkey is listed on the Ark of Taste of Slow Food USA. By purchasing these turkeys for your Thanksgiving and Christmas tables, you are contributing to the preservation of antiquated breeds that are threatened by industrial standardization. (Other farms are offering similar birds fed gmo grains for $7.99/lb.) Our deposit requirement is $25 and will be credited to your total in November. CAFE price is only $4.50/lb (Again this is for non-gmo!) There is a minimum requirement for raising out a small flock; if this number is not met, your deposit will be cheerfully refunded. This is the ONLY week that we will list this pre-order offer. Be sure to get your holiday turkey now. Call your mom; call your grandma. Tell your neighbor too. Don't miss this opportunity!”

It’s never too early to plan your Thanksgiving dinner!  ...  If you order your turkey through the Clemson Area Food Exchange, you must do so this weekend - orders can be placed until Monday at 6:30 a.m.

And, don’t forget – you can also buy goat meat, chicken, pork, and lots more through CAFÉ and farmers’ markets throughout the Upstate.

Enjoy!
