Dear Upstate Locavores,
Spring is in the air! See below for some announcements of upcoming events.
(1) Upstate Locavores Spring Potluck: Last year, the theme of the Upstate Locavores potluck was “Meet Your Farmer.” This year, our theme is “Sustaining Local Foods into the Future: Practical Steps for Moving Forward.” Our next potluck is scheduled for Thursday, April 28, 5:30-7:30, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Clemson. Our guest speaker will be Shawn Jadrnicek, the new manager of the Student Organic Farm at Clemson University. We will also feature other announcements about spring and summer events.
(2) The 3rd annual Garden Fest at the South Carolina Botanical Garden, Saturday, April 16. This year, the festival will be held in conjunction with the Spring Plant Sale at the SCBG Nursery Area. Among other items, the Garden will have warm-season transplants (a diversity of tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, and tomatillos) available for purchase, along with seeds of additional seasonal vegetables to sow directly.
(3) The new Clemson Area Food Exchange (CAFÉ) is now open for business! This internet-based market features produce (vegetables, meat, honey, etc.) grown/raised within a 50 mile radius of Clemson. The online market is “open” on Saturdays and Sundays until 9:00 p.m. Customers can then pick up their orders on Tuesday afternoons, 4-6 p.m. at Remix, near the Blue Heron (405 College Avenue). You can find out more at www.clemsonareafoodexchange.com or through a direct link to the market at http://cafe.locallygrown.net. If you know any farmers who would like to join the market, contact Elian Evans at elian...@gmail.com.
(4) You can also obtain fresh, locally grown food through numerous other outlets. The City of Clemson Farmers market will open soon at a new location (Patrick Square off Isaqueena Trail). And, don’t forget the Upstate Locally Grown internet market (http://upstatesc.locallygrown.net/). ULG now has a satellite market (“Clemson Locally Grown”), with a dropoff on Wednesday afternoons, between 4:00-5:00 pm. at the Clemson Montessori School (on Pendleton Road, on the right, just past Columbo’s Pizza).
Between the two Internet markets and the upcoming farmer’s markets, the community continues to expand its offerings of locally grown food!
If you are aware of any other events, please let us know so we can pass them along to the mailing list.
Sincerely,
Ellie Taylor and Catherine Mobley
