Heyy,

If you don't get APA NY Metro events - here is an awesome event they
are hosting on Friday, Oct 22. I'm not able to go but wanted to
spread the word as it looks really cool!

Maybe a group can get together??

The American Planning Association, NY Metro Chapter's Environmental
Committee hosts a tour to the Queens Botanical Garden, a LEED Platinum
green building and model of environmental sustainability. At this
tour, Diana Pangestu of Science Application Int'l Corp (SAIC) will
also present the New York State Energy Research and Development
Authority's (NYSERDA's) incentives for green buildings and new
construction/gut-rehab commercial projects.

About the Queens Botanical Garden:
A veritable encyclopedia of green building techniques, the Visitor &
Administration Center is a model of sustainable design. Opened in
September 2007, its features include:

• Planted green roof that minimizes storm water run-off
• Solar panels that generate 17% of the building’s electricity
• Geothermal heating and cooling that uses 55-degree water
pumped from
an aquifer to maintain the building’s climate
• Graywater recycling that cleans water from its sinks,
dishwasher,
and shower for use in the building’s public toilets
• Compost toilets for the Garden’s administrative staff
• Bioswales that capture storm water to reduce pressure on the
City’s
overburdened sewer system

We will be meeting at the QBG at 3pm on Friday, October 22. The tour
is about an hour long. There is no cost for this event, but we are
limited to 20 people. First come, first serve. Please email Diana
Pangestu at diana.f....@saic.com, or 212-660-1902, to reserve
your place. Please include full contact information. Thanks.
