Education is key to low cost dog licensing and vaccinations

Pet population is on the rise and in efforts to avoid mandatory spay
and neuter laws the city council will consider a new proposal.


Adopting a mandatory spay and neuter law was rejected and referred
back to the council for an alternative solutions.


Captain Greg Williamson of the Bakersfield Police Department proposed
an education pilot program at Monday's city council meeting.


The proposed program would encourage voluntary compliance by
educating
the public about spay and neutering their pets.


Williamson says they will canvas different neighborhoods in order to
educate people.


The city council will take into consideration a pilot program that
will consist of clinics that will do low cost vaccinations and
licensing.


Currently only 8% of dogs in Kern County are licensed and it's this
point Williamson feels that anything above 8% would be successful.
