Hi Up.front-ers,

Our website has been featured recently in articles in the New York Times and the Guardian.
I'd like to add the logos of these publications to our front page, to build some brand trust with visitors and show that we're legit.
I notice a lot of sites are doing this these days. But does anyone know the legality of it? Do I need permission?
Does anyone have experience with this?

Hi Joel,

good question. As you say, you see this on startup landing pages all over the place, and I have done this for clients in the past, too. But as logos are usually protected by copyright, I think the only way to get this legal is to ask those newspapers for written permission. Some companies have guidelines for logo usage on their websites, too, maybe check that first.
On the other hand, as there are no conflicting interests and you are even linking to their website (maybe?), I would probably just put the logos up and see what happens. You can ask for forgiveness later :)

Anyone in the up.front crowd who knows more about this? Sounds like a topic for a lightning talk :)

Cheers,
Kristina
