BIOINFORMATICS LABORATORY - JAVA PROGRAMMER

A position is available immediately within the Computational Biology and
Informatics Laboratory (CBIL) at the University of Pennsylvania for a
JAVA
PROGRAMMER. CBIL, directed by Dr. G. Christian Overton,
performs research and development in computational genomics, data mining
in
biological databases, intelligent systems for automated annotation of
genomic
sequence, knowledge representation systems for analysis of biological
function, Internet-enabled graphical user interfaces, and advanced query
systems for the integration of distributed, heterogeneous biological
data
resources.

The programmer will be responsible for designing and developing data
visualization components, database connectivity, data analysis
algorithms,
graphical user interfaces, and object-based system integration.

He/she must have substantial experience programming in Java, C++, C or
Perl,
preferably using object-oriented design and in the areas of user
interfaces,
computer graphics, data visualization or data analysis. Additional
experience
with SQL, Prolog and/or object-oriented DBMSs is desirable.

Good communication skills and the ability to work with others on a
development
team are essential. Demonstrated experience in proposal writing and/or
the
publication of technical papers is desirable.

The applicant should have an MS in computer science or a BS with at
least
three years of relevant experience.

of new programmatic initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania,

computational biology and bioinformatics.
