Bioinformatics job: Scientific/Database Programmer

SCIENTIFIC/DATABASE PROGRAMMER: HUMAN GENOME PROJECT

A position is available immediately in the Computational Biology and
Informatics Laboratory (CBIL; http://www.cbil.upenn.edu) at the
University of Pennsylvania for a programmer to participate in the
development and application of advanced database technology for the
integration of distributed, heterogenous biological databases. The
project is part of a collaborative effort between Dr. Chris Overton,
director of CBIL, and Drs. Peter Buneman, Susan Davidson and Val
Tannen in the Computer and Information Sciences Department
(http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~db/home.html). The successful applicant
will have the opportunity to influence and collaborate in the research
and development of the next generation of distributed cross-database
query and data mining tools applied to the challenges of the Human
Genome Project.

The successful applicant will have substantial experience programming
in Java, C++, C, or Perl and experience with at least one of the major
commercial database systems (Sybase, Oracle, Illustra, etc.) He/she
will use software developed in-house to integrate various biological
databases and data sources in novel and useful ways, in addition to
being involved in state-of-the-art research and development into the
next generation of distributed cross-database query and data mining
tools. Knowledge of database and programming language technology in
general is a definite plus, as is any experience with object-oriented
design, user interface design, molecular biology, and data modeling.

Good communication skills and the ability to work on small development
teams are essential. Demonstrated experience in proposal writing
and/or the publication of technical papers is desirable. The
candidate should have an MS in computer science or a BS with at least
three years of relevant experience. Salary commensurate with
