The University of Pennsylvania Library System is seeking an ASSISTANT
LIBRARIAN for its School of Engineering Library.

BROAD FUNCTIONS:
Assists the Engineering Librarian in meeting the information needs of
the School and in the administration of the Library. Provides reference
service, teaches faculty and students to use information resources,
shares in collection development and departmental liaison
responsibilities. Serves as information systems liaison to the
Engineering and Science Libraries.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides pro-active onsite and remote reference service using both
electronic and traditional print resources. Creates web documentation and
contributes to the design of appropriate user interfaces for electronic
resources. Serves as liaison to a number of academic departments. Works
with faculty and the Librarians to assess the needs of the research and
instructional programs in these departments. Develops and implements
innovative and effective electronic services. Energetically contributes
to the creation of a dynamic teaching program in the Engineering and
Science Libraries. Produces user documentation. Develops collections in
a number of areas, working closely with faculty, and with other science
and engineering Librarians. Works with the Librarian to manage the
collections. Consults with faculty about appropriate replacement of
print collections with electronic resources. Serves as information
systems liaison to the Engineering and Science Libraries. Acts for the
Librarian in her absence.

QUALIFICATIONS:
MLS from an ALA-accredited program. Academic background in Engineering
or a related science discipline strongly preferred. Experience in
on-line database searching, and an aptitude for teaching required.
Strong computing skills required. Strong interpersonal skills and
excellent written and verbal communication abilities essential. A public
service orientation and strong reference skills needed. Knowledge of
scientific research methods and familiarity with the changing information
and publishing environment in engineering and science needed.

SALARY REQUIREMENTS:
Appointment as Librarian I requires no previous experience, and has a
starting salary of $26,986 to $35,123. Appointment as Librarian II
requires 1 to 3 years of previous professional experience, and has a
starting salary of $29,664-38,677.

SCOPE OF UNIT:
The Engineering Library is responsible for meeting the information needs
of the faculty and students of the School of Engineering and Applied
Science and of other members of the Penn community. The School
comprises 7 academic departments including Computer Science, currently
enrolls approximately 600 graduate students, 1200 undergraduates, 50
post-doctoral fellows and has 105 full-time faculty members. The
Library's collection of 75,000 volumes is housed in two separate
buildings and includes 800 current periodicals. The materials budget for
FY 97 is over $600,000. The Library has 2 professional librarians, 3
paraprofessionals, and 5 FTE student library workers.
