GENOME CENTER SYSTEMS MANAGER/ALGORITHM DEVELOPER

A position is available immediately within the Computational Biology
and Informatics Laboratory (CBIL) at the University of Pennsylvania
for a SYSTEMS MANAGER/ALGORITHM DEVELOPER. CBIL, directed by
Dr. G. Christian Overton, performs research and development in
computational genomics, data mining in biological databases,
intelligent systems for automated annotation of genomic sequence,
knowledge representation systems for analysis of biological function,
Internet-enabled graphical user interfaces, and advanced query systems
for the integration of distributed, heterogeneous biological data
resources.

SYSTEMS MANAGER/ALGORITHM DEVELOPER (SA) will be responsible for
maintaining a distributed network of Sun workstations and servers,
system software, and molecular biology application specific software.
The SA will be in charge of coordinating his/her efforts with those of
the other staff members involved in these tasks. In addition, the SA
will customize software for CBIl's use, and participate in the design
and implementation of molecular biology and genetics software,
integration of software, and the development of user interfaces.
He/she must also be capable of independently developing new algorithms
for data analysis when required. Good communication skills and the
ability to work on a development team with others are essential.
Demonstrated experience in proposal writing and/or the publication of
technical papers is desirable. In addition to expertise in Unix, C
and X-windows, familiarity with Perl, Java, Prolog, and SQL is also
desirable. The SA should have an MS in computer science or a BS with
at least three years of relevant experience. Salary commensurate with
experience. Comprehensive benefits package. As part of new
programmatic initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania,
opportunities are also available for advanced training leading to a
degree in computational biology and bioinformatics.
