Firstly, if you haven't tried for awhile, try again. The voices have gotten way better in the last couple of years. Something to do with AI getting better at a completely non-terrifying pace. Nothing to worry about there...
Kindle has an immersive reading mode that allows you to listen and read at the same time if you own both the ebook and audiobook. You can often buy the audiobook at a discount if you buy it along with the ebook. This is more expensive than using Evie but might be a good option for people who prefer human readers.
On iPhone, you can use the Amazon Alexa app to read Kindle books for you. It's a pretty good listen given that it's not a human reading with full context -it only getting a little hung-up on occasion with some punctuation etc. (Caveat being that I've only used this method for about 1hr so far)
I'll also plug Microsoft Edge as a great tool for this: There's both a desktop browser and a mobile app, and it has a fantastic built-in Read Aloud feature that works in both. You just click the Read Aloud icon or press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+U on a keyboard and it will start reading your current web page or document out loud!
It has hundreds of neural voices (Microsoft calls them "Natural" voices) in dozens of languages and dialects, and you can change the reading speed too. I find the voices to be among the best I've heard, and the super low activation energy of not having to copy-paste anything or switch to another window means I use it much more often than when I tried apps like Neural Reader.
Sidenote, but as a browser, since it's Chromium-based it's basically the same as Google Chrome (you can even install extensions from the Chrome Web Store) but with slightly less bloat and better performance.
I'm not sure if this is a question to be added here or if it would be better suited for the Accessibility section of the community forum, but I'm working on making a StoryMap Accessible to anyone who uses a screen reader. I'm having a bit of difficulty and I think It's with the fact that I've used the sidecar option to house sets of pictures and text. Only the first image and its alt text is read aloud by screen readers, and the text is skipped completely.
It looks like NaturalReader doesn't read alternative text, but instead, only visible text. Using a tool like VoiceOver on Mac or Narrator on Windows will allow you to actually tab over or select media and hear its alternative text read aloud. Using the story referenced above, I am able to have the alternative text read to me:
My screen reader is reading the text and attribution from all slides in a sidecar. Are you adding those pictures and text on different slides, or all on a single slide within a sidecar? What browser and screen reader are you currently utilizing to test?
Thanks for including that context. When I use the Chrome speech reader on the story you sent, it reads all of the slide narration to me. I am not hearing any image alt text however, did you have added attribution to the images within the sidecar at the minute? The screen shot you sent is of the builder, just want to check if you are testing the speech in Preview mode or on the published story as well, since that is how readers will be accessing the story?
Abby, I have added alternative text and attribution. I also have links below some images that provide URLs that are not spoken by the Google Chrome speech reader or others I've tried, including Natural Reader.
