MOREHEAD, KY --The Morehead State men's basketball team shot 52 percent from three-point range en route to a 114-49 victory against the Kentucky State Thorobreds at home on FamilyLeisure.com Court Tuesday.

The Eagles (3-3) had six players score in double figures, led by Kalil Thomas, who had 21 points. Branden Maughmer added 20 points and Jalen Hawkins, playing in his first game as an Eagle after transferring and missing the first five games, helped out with 18 points and two steals off the bench. In his first career start, Trent Scott stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, career-high nine assists, three blocked shots and two steals.

The Eagles went above the century mark for the first time since scoring 102 against Alice Lloyd (Ky.) in 2019.

Morehead State took advantage of great ball movement in Tuesday's game, piling up a season-high 28 assists on 39 made field goals - also the most field goals made since canning 41 versus Alice Lloyd in the 2019 game. Scott's nine assists led the distribution list for the Eagles, and Tucson Redding also added five assists of his own.

The Morehead State defense held Kentucky State shooters to just 30 percent from the field, including 28 percent from three-point range. The Thorobreds did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only nine offensive rebounds and scored six second chance points while Morehead State pulled down 35 defensive rebounds.

After jumping out to a 17-15 advantage, Morehead State went on a 13-0 run with 12:24 left in the first half to increase its lead to 30-15. The Eagles then added eight points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 49-26 advantage. Morehead State capitalized on 13 Kentucky State turnovers in the period, turning them into 19 points on the other end of the floor.

Following intermission, Morehead State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 60-33 before going on an 18-0 run to grow the lead to 78-33 with 7:40 to go in the contest. The Eagles kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 114-49 win. Morehead State capitalized on 15 Kentucky State turnovers in the period, collecting 24 points off those turnovers.

Game Notes

Alex Gross notched a double-double for the Eagles with 12 points and 12 rebounds, his second double-double as an MSU athlete.

The Eagles made over half of their attempts from three point range, knocking down 13 of 25 shots.

The Lions had five players reach double figures, including three players with 20 or more tallies. Gray paced Penn State with a career-high 27 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including a 7-for-11 effort from behind the arc. She also dished out three assists and pulled in three boards. Sophomore Nikki Greene (Diboll, Texas) notched her second career double-double with career highs of 20 points and 16 rebounds, while sophomore Alex Bentley (Indianapolis, Ind.) narrowly missed her first career double-double with 26 points and nine assists.

Redshirt sophomore Mia Nickson (Ashburn, Va.) came off of the bench to score 15 points with nine rebounds and three steals and freshman Maggie Lucas (Narberth, Pa.) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 tallies. Junior Renee Womack (Lansdale, Pa.), who is returning from ACL surgery, scored all five of her points in the final 2:43 of the second overtime to seal the win for Penn State.

Bentley was on fire early as she scored 10 points to lead the Lady Lions to a 12-3 lead in the first four minutes. Following one free throw by Dayton, Lucas scored her first collegiate points to push the Penn State lead to 14-4 with 15:34 left in the opening frame. The Flyers fought back and cut the lead to two points after a 12-4 run to make it an 18-16 game with less than 10 minutes remaining.

After several exchanges in scores, the Lady Lions were able to stretch the lead back to seven points on Bentley's fadeaway jumper at the shot clock buzzer to make it a 35-28 game with 5:20 remaining. However, the Flyers finished the half on a 12-5 run to send the teams into the break tied at 40-40.

Bentley led all scorers with 17 points and two steals, while Nickson added seven points and three rebounds. Senior Julia Trogele (Devon, Pa.) and Greene each pulled in seven rebounds for the Lady Lions.

The second half continued the dead heat until four points by Greene and a pair of points by Gray gave Penn State a 50-46 lead four minutes into the second frame. However, the Flyers scored six of the game's next eight points to squad the game at 52-52 with 12:31 on the clock.

The game remained a seesaw affair until the Flyers took a five-point lead at 68-63 with 7:20 remaining. The Lady Lions came back to tie the game at 68-68 with 6:25 left on a rebound and layup by Nickson and a three-pointer by Gray. After an exchange of baskets, Patrice Lalor knocked down a three-pointer and Justine Raterman scored to give Dayton a 75-70 lead with 4:20 on the clock. Lucas drained a three-pointer to cut the lead, but Dayton got back-to-back three-pointers from Raterman and Kristin Daugherty to stretch the lead to 81-73 with 2:22 left.

Bentley stopped the Dayton run with a basket and cut the lead to six (81-75). After Kari Daugherty made one of two free throws, Greene converted on a 12-footer to slice the Flyer lead to 82-77 with 1:49 remaining. Kayla Moses split a pair of free throws to give the Flyers a six-point lead (83-77) with 1:29 left. Gray responded nine seconds later with a three-pointer to cut the lead in half (83-80). After a defensive stop, the Lions took possession and Gray tied the game with a three-pointer with 15 ticks on the clock to square the game at 83-83. Both teams had opportunities to win the game but neither could convert.

Kristin Daughterty continued to have the hot hand and gave the Flyers the early lead in the extra period, but Trogele hit her first three-pointer of the season to give the Lady Lions an 86-85 lead with four minutes left. However, Dayton scored the game's next four points to take an 89-86 advantage with three minutes remaining. The squads swapped scores for the next several possessions and the Lions took the ball with less than 20 seconds remaining, but Lucas' attempt was blocked as time wound down.

Penn State won the tip to start the second overtime and immediately converted with a basket by Bentley. After a defensive stand, Lucas drained a pair of free throws to give the Lions a 102-98 lead with 3:51 remaining. The squads swapped scores on their next possession before Kristin Daughterty drained another three-pointer to make it a one-point Penn State lead at 104-103 with less than three minutes to play. Womack scored the game's next five points to give the Lady Lions a 109-103 lead with 39.9 seconds remaining in the second overtime. The Lions would seal the win with three additional free throws down the stretch to come away with a 112-107 win.
