Hi Team,

We had some questions about the N0, N1, N2 classifications for newcomers. I got some clarification; basically only students who enter the country in the second semester are considered N0, all the others that enter in semester 1 are N1s. That means all returning ELD students, in Darcey and Alima's classes, are going to be considered N2s next year. According to our enrollment counts for next year, we will only have 4, N1 students, and all will be in the 6th grade. We discussed that ELLMA is recommending sheltered for N0 and N1, but not N2s.

Please let me know if you have more questions- I'm learning too.

Thanks!

Tag in AERIES

Name

ELL Status

Notes

N1

First Year Newcomer

Newcomer
(or Recently Enrolled after one year in OUSD if student was N0 previous year.)

Any newcomer entering the district over the summer or in the first semester of a school year would be tagged N1 at the time of enrollment at the student assignment center.  The field automatically advances to N2 during the summer AERIES rollover unless a site requests a student lose the tag.

N2

Second Year Newcomer

Recently Enrolled

This field automatically advances to N3 during the summer AERIES rollover unless a site requests student lose the tag.

N3

Third Year Newcomer

Recently Enrolled

This field automatically advances to NX during the summer AERIES rollover unless sites request student remains in newcomer programming for a fourth year.

N4

Four+ Year Newcomer

TBD based on student progress.

Not automatic -- by appeal. At the end of each school year a list of N3 students would be generated and in order to continuing to N4 would not be automatic. NX would be the automatic step after N3.

N0

Mid-Year Arrival Newcomer

Newcomer

Students who arrive during the second semester of a school year would be classified as N0 and advance to N1 the following year.

NX

Former Newcomer

Once students exit newcomer programs after three years, this tag would remain to enable reports to be run to examine the progress of former newcomers.
