GINGER PLANTING REQUIREMENTS:

1. To plant 1 acre of Ginger you need 900Kgs to 1000kgs of Ginger Rhizomes, and the current price for Ginger planting materials per Kg is 3,500Shs (as of 2ND September 2021), therefore you will need 3,150,000Ug shs per acre.

2. Planting labour is 400,000Ug shs, depending on the community where you are planting. Ginger requires very well drained soils and no water logging, no tree shades, no underground roots, you must prepare a clean garden.

3. After planting you will need 100 bags of coffee husks per acre, Coffee husks act as organic manure. If not available you can go for any compost, organic, and conventional fertilizers e.g. NPK. This will cost 800,000-900,000Ug shs depending on the price of coffee husks per bag.

4. PLANTING SEASON:
Usually Ginger is planted in the dry season, January to March and August-October Planting season. Unlike other crops, once it is planted in the dry season, it stays dormant in the soils, and once the rains start, it starts germinating and benefits from every drop of rain. Hybrid Ginger (BIG) matures in 9 months, and local Kienyeji (SMALL) 12 Months.

5. LAND PREPARATION:
Land needs to be prepared with 1st and 2nd plough concurrently. After the 2nd plough, you will need to plant sprouted Ginger rhizomes. You need well drained soils, free of tree shades and underground roots. Ginger grows very well in black loamy soils

6. SEASONAL TIMING:
Ginger in general has 2 planting seasons January to March and August to October.

WHY PLANT IN DRY SEASON:
Ginger is one of the crops that are planted in the dry season. The reason for this, as a rhizome, when planted in the dry season, it remains dormant in the soils, immediately the rains set in, it starts sprouting, and it will enjoy every drop of rain until the end of the rainy season, unlike other crops that you have to plant after the rains sets in. Ginger rhizomes can stay dormant in the soil for 8 month until desirable growing conditions come in.

EXPECTED HARVEST:
With all growing conditions in place, good rains, good soils, timely weeding, timely pest control, and fertilizer application, in one acre harvest returns with be between 7-9 tons after 9months maturity period (Hybrid). Expected export prices depends on destination e.g. Europe, ASIA, Middle East, Far East, North Africa, South Africa and East African Countries, prices fluctuate between 4,000Ug shs and 5,000Ug shs.

METHODS OF FARMING:
Depending on available conditions and ecological zoning, we recommend the open gardening, and Pit method. Opening gardening works very well in areas that reason heavy rain fall, and Pit method works favorably in areas that receive low rainfall e.g. Northern Uganda, Eastern Uganda and westnile regions. In the pit method in case of drought, irrigation and watering is very easy to manage, and this can be done 3 times a week. The pit is usually 3meters length, 1.5 meters width, and 1 foot depth.
