7th National Industrial Relations Conference 2016

Jan 9-10, 2016

Respected Sir,

Greetings from XLRI School of Business and Human resources.

The Forum for Industrial Relations at XLRI (Fire@x) is honoured to invite you to the 7th National IR Conference on the 9th,10th January, 2016 at XLRI, Jamshedpur

The theme of the conference is

Changing Labour Market and Industrial Relations, Changing times: Make in India and Ensuing Labour Reforms

on 9th and 10th January, 2016

at XLRI Jamshedpur

About the theme:

India’s ever expanding service sector has been under pressure from other countries offering lower labour arbitrage. Coupled with a stagnating manufacturing sector, the current landscape offers a variety of challenges for trade union activists, policy makers and the management. Notwithstanding the above deliberations, there have been other contributing factors to the changing IR scenario. Changing workforce demographics, decline in trade union membership, trade union leadership dilemmas and renewed concerns regarding the social and labour security of workers in the unorganized sector have further complicated the various industrial relation mechanisms and will be the focus of discussion in this year’s edition of I&ER conference. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his speech on Independence Day, reiterated his aim to consolidate existing 44 labour laws to 4 codes. In light of his statements and other government proposals to aid the much advertised Make in India campaign, the conference would bring to light various perspectives and discussions evaluating the ramifications of the proposed labour law reforms. An attempt would also be made to benchmark our practices with labour practices across other nations to identify lacunae in our system and to facilitate its betterment. Discussions  on  what  steps  need  to  be  taken  to  provide  social  security to workers in the unorganised sector and the failure of trade unions in addressing their aspirations will also be on the agenda.

It would also be worthwhile to mention here that the conference has always seen active participation from industry leaders and top academicians, as was evident from the participation to the 6th National IR conference, which saw speakers of the likes of:

·       P N Prasad, Chief HRM, Tata Steel

·       Alfred Osta, EVP, Mahindra and Mahindra

·       Dharm Rakshit, AVP, Mondelez

·       Sahil Lal. Head ER, Maruti Suzuki, Manesar plant

·       Gautham Mody, General Secretary, NTUI,

·       N Vasudevan, President, NTUI

·       Prasenjit Bose, Social activist

·       Karthik Shekar from UNITES

·       Prof. N. Ernesto (IIMA)

·       Prof. Jerome Joseph (IIMA)

·       Prof. Ratna Sen, HOD, IISWBM

We would thus solicit your active participation and cordially invite you to attend the conference and/or share your research by means of a paper presentation in the presence of eminent dignitaries in the conference

The Conference will have panel discussions on

1. Make in India - Ensuing labour law reforms and learnings from global best practices
