I'm writing on behalf of my advisor (Katharine Cashman), a UO professor
currently in Hawaii, who is trying to access her oregon account remotely
using Eudora. She can receive messages from anyone, but can only send mail
to others on oregon. She gets a message that says other addresses "are
not acceptable to your SMTP server", which she has set to
oregon.uoregon.edu. Do you have any tips about the Eudora configuration/
settings (such as IP address) she should use?
Please send replies to cashman@oregon as well as to me (jhammer@oregon).
Thank you,
Julia Hammer

hello Kathy,
The reason you cannot send email to anyone outside the oregon domain is
because you are connection to the UO using an external internet service
provider in Hawaii.
To remedy the situation you can contact the computer support staff in
Hawaii ( Robert from microhelp sent a reply on this to Julia but forgot to
copy it to you )
Ask them specifically for their SMTP server address. Then in Eudora, you
can set this under OPTIONS->TOOLS->SETTINGS-> and SENDING MAIL. Change the
SMTP address from oregon-mailhost.uoregon.edu to whatever address the
computer folks give you. Your POP email user name and Real name remain the
same.
This will allow you to send mail. The reason why we don't allow mail from
external sources to transit our systems is because of SPAM mail which
causes lots of problems for us world wide with threats that other
organisations will boycott our mail servers if we allow such
transmissions.
Sincerely
Karl Kurien at MCS / Geology
