Is there international access to my gladstone e-mail account? Actually I
didn't think of it till now -- I am studying abroad through an exchange
program, so I am still a U of O student with active accounts and will be
back, but how can I check my gladstone e-mail from overseas? Can my e-mail
be forwarded to my e-mail account at the University of Aberdeen in
Scotland? I won't get that account address until I get there....who should
I talk to? I leave for Scotland on the 10th of September and will be there
for nine months, but I won't have an e-mail account there until after 25
September. What should I do? ( I will not have internet access in my room
-- only in computer labs or cyber cafe -- no phones in rooms or ethernet at
University of Aberdeen). Help!
Korene

Hi Korene,

Happily, the answer to your question is yes. You even have a choice!
Perhaps the easiest method of checking your gladstone mail (if you decide
that is not to forward it) is to use a telnet client. Upon arriving in
Aberdeen, just inquire of the computer staff how you mightgo about
telneting from their systems. Alternatively, you can easily forward your
mail to your new address. To do so, do the following:

1)Telnet to gladstone.
2)Login as usual.
3)At the percent prompt type "pico" (without the quotes).
4)On the first line, just type your new email address.
5)Press the "Ctrl" key on your keyboard AND the "x" key at the same time to
exit pico.
6)It will ask you if you wish to save, press the "y" key.
7)Enter ".forward" when it asks for a name for the file(without quotes and
the period is required).
8)You will be dropped back at the percent prompt. Just logout.

You are done. Your mail will be forwarded to the address you typed. You
might want to send mail to your gladstone account just to check that it s
being forwarded correctly. If you have any questions or problems, you can
also call us at 346-4412.

Hope that helps,

Robert.

PS. Enjoy your time in Aberdeen. I was accepted there for a PhD in
Mathematics. It is a lovely city. Try to get down to York, in England, if
you can, that is where I lived ann went to university before coming to the
States to study. A wonderful place!!

There are two ways for you to check your e-mail from abroad. One is to
telnet, for a computer with internet access, to gladstone.uoregon.edu,
log in with your username and password for this account, and use pine
as your e-mail reader. Information about pine and telnet can be found
at the following sites:

http://cc.uoregon.edu/pineonunix.html
http://cc.uoregon.edu/terminaldialin.html
http://cc.uoregon.edu/waysofconnecting.html

The second way is to forward your e-mail to a web based e-mail
account. A good thing, that I have found, is that WWW access is easier
to find, use, and get support for (while you are away) for most users.
Second, on a recent trip, telnet access was posing major problems due
to the poor communication connections that were available there.

I have had good sucess by using Yahoo mail. There are many free web
base e-mail accounts out there but many have a lot of ad's that you
may not be interested in.

To set this up, first create an account at one of these free
web-e-mail sites and follow the procedures at this site to forward
your e-mail to this new account.

good luck on your trip...
