Hey - I thought I'd just try this to see if I could get some advice or
engage someone to help "fix" a couple of problems for me.

#1 We'd like to shorten our URL address for our web page to make it memory
friendly, catchy. Possible?? Options??? It is now
http://oregon.uoregon.edu/~mnh/ What other info do you need to help us with
this?

# 2 We had a Mac LC III donated to us from the Humanities Center. A staff
person had used it in her home for work for the center. I need someone to
come over and look it over and tell me what we need to get it hooked up to
Ethernet we have the access but need card, cord, etc.? They used it and had
e-mail, more than likely with a modem. The person who donated it is new, so
knows zip about it and the person who had it at home is no longer there.
Can I engage someone to do that, cost? time? how?

#3 We have a Mac Performa 636 in the educational room of the museum and a
beautiful LaserWriter II printer sitting next to it. They are not
connected. Seems that if the printer was connected, the students had to get
off the Internet to use the printer. Since they use it to produce documents
it was a hassle because they'd like to use both. We need advice on how/if
they can be connected. maybe same visit as above???

Unfortunately - we have no "MAC" person in our building with a great deal of
knowledge....so I am just putting this out there. I will be on vacation
next week so when you respond, please respond to: po...@oregon.uoregon.edu
We share an office so she knows about these "issues". Thanks for your
help/advice! have a great week-end!!

Howdy - Sorry for the slow response. I answer your questions in the text
below.

Sorry, there is no easy way to do this. Here are the options:

- Move your Web pages over to darkwing.uoregon.edu. But, first speak with
Joe St Sauver at 346-1720, or j...@oregon.uoregon.edu about whether you can
get a Virtual Host on darkwing. Basically, it is possible to have an
account on darkwing that give you an URL like
http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~mnh/
but which is mapped to something like
http://mnh.uoregon.edu
This, however, creates quite a bit of overhead on darkwing and is not done
in most cases.

- You can use your own server machine (Mac, PC, UNIX box, etc.) and get the
address mnh.uoregon.edu, which is currently available on this campus.

The method for setting up a new machine on the network is to contact
Network Services at 346-4395 to setup an appointment when someone can come
over and install a card for the LC III, install some network software and
get it up on the network. You can also see their on-line Web page at
http://ns.uoregon.edu/get_connected/net_hardware.html. The cost to your
group is the following:

* 1 LC III PDS card (note, *not* an LC PDS card). The Ethernet two cards
that I know of that support the LCIII are the Asante MacCon3 and the Sonic
Ethernet TNT (SSC0408) cards. Price ranges seem to be from about $100.00
to $150.00 delivered.

* If the office where the computer is located needs an Ethernet jack
installed or activated this is $100.00.

It's probably easiest to call and talk with someone to work out cost, time,
etc.

Ah, this one is fun to explain. OK, here goes.

If the printer is a LaserWriter IIf, IINT, or IINTX, then it *does not*
have an Ethernet interface. If the printer is a LaserWriter IIg, then it
has built-in Ethernet. It sounds like the printer does not have Ethernet
on it, so you must use the LocalTalk port on the printer when connecting it
to the Mac. When you do this you do need to open your AppleTalk (or
Network) Control Panel on the Performa and change the setting from
"Ethernet" to "Printer Port" to print to the printer. This, temporarily,
interrupts your LocalTalk network connection. You can, however, still use
programs like Netscape, Telnet, etc. when you are setup like this.

Phew!

So, there is a way around this. You can install a piece of software called
the LaserWriter Bridge. This software allows your Mac to print to the
LaserWriter II using the LocalTalk connection (via the Printer Port on the
Mac) without having to drop your network connection. When installed the
printer should show up in the default AppleTalk zone in your chooser (this
will be the UOnet zone) and you can just print to it.

A couple of things to know about the LaserWriter Bridge software:

* It is critical to closely read the ReadMe files that come with the
software to set it up correctly.
* Your printer will now be visible on the network. Not a big deal, but
something to know.
* When the Performa is shut down the printer will not be visible on the
network.
* If you allow others to print to the printer it will *seriously* affect
the performance of the Performa. Printing directly from the Performa,
however, is fine.
* In some cases the software simply does not work. In most cases, however,
it works fine.

You can find the LaserWriter Bridge software on our CC Public Domain
fileserver by opening the following folders.

Printer Drivers
Utilities & Patches
LaserWriter/LocalTalk Bridge

You can get to CC Public Domain by going to the Chooser, clicking on
AppleShare, clicking the UOnet AppleTalk zone, double clicking on the CC
Public Domain file server icon, choosing to connect as Guest and double
clicking on the CC Public Domain volume name. This will mount CC Public
Domain on your machine's Desktop.

Best of luck!
