Howdy - There are quite a few reasons why one person's 56Kbps modem will
connect at a decent speed (48.8 is good) and another will not. If your
56Kbps modem uses the K56flex protocol our 346-6520 modem pool does not
support this. Thus, you would connect at the next fastest speed which is
33.6/28.8. If your modem uses X2 technology or V.90 for its 56K
connection, then your phone line might be old, noisy, or of inferior
quality to permit the high speed connection. If you have your phone line
split in your house between multiple phones, other devices, etc. or you are
using a phone jack which is physically distant from where the phone lines
enter your house, then this could cause your modem to connect at slower
speeds. Try plugging your modem into the directly into the main phone jack
(if you have a modem that uses X2 or V.90) and see if this helps.
A couple of notes:

1.) If your modem is using k56flex you can probably get a software upgrade
to the V.90 protocol for your modem. Go to the Web site of the
manufacturer of your modem to see if they make one available for your
particular model.

2.) Our 346-3565 number will be support 56Kflex modems in the near future.
You could use this, but we won't recommend this since *all* our modems
(that support 56K connections) will be using the V.90 protocol later this
year.

Best of luck!

Sincerely,
