Hi Students for Global Health,

This Wednesday we have SGH co-founder and Village Health Works Communications Director Alex Goodell speaking at our regular meeting. Alex just returned from working abroad for VHW in Burundi, East Africa. Meetings are held weekly on Wednesdays in Gerlinger 248 @7pm.

Other Important Info:

1. I've attached the Track Town Pizza fundraiser flyer to this email in .PDF as well as .DOC formats. The fundraiser is today! Please distribute flyers and get your roommates to order take-out! The attached flyer is at the very end of the email.

2. As always, we have sweatshirts for sale. American Apparel, forest green, name + logo on back, soft as heaven. Email Michelle (mich...@uoglobalhealth.org) if you're interested, and she'll bring your size to this Wednesday Weekly meeting.

3. FINAL 2010-2011 SGH Board Election announcement:

If you are an active member of SGH, but you were unable to attend last week's meeting and vote in the election, you can send an "absentee ballot"!  You must give Michelle your "absentee ballot" before this Wednesday's meeting. You can either email me or physically hand me a sheet of paper with the names of the candidates you are voting for and the appropriate position title. Below is a list of candidates. I've only included positions that had more than one candidate running. 

Running for Executive Director:

Dalila Sarabia
Major: Psychology, Minor: Planning, Public Policy and Management
Pre-Public Health
"I am running for Executive Director. Although I have not been able to
attend the meetings this term due to class, I will just be taking part-time
classes next year and anticipate having plenty of extra time on the side to
fulfill a leadership position for SGH. I'm interested in this position
because I have a strong passion in the health field and want to continue
promoting the mission of SGH by serving as a board member representative
and doing campus outreach.  As a Peer Health Educator, I have developed
planning and public speaking skills and have researched various health
promotion campaigns as well as actively participating in campus outreach
for the Health Center. I also hope to serve as a Multicultural Ambassador
for the UO next year which may offer another network for promoting SGH to
under-represented prospective students. As Executive Director of SGH, I
plan to connect with other student groups and community programs who share
similar missions of social justice and global health equity to offer more
opportunities for SGH members to get involved in activities both on campus
and in the community. I would also like to investigate and work towards
building a health-related area of concentration at the University for
students interested in pursuing an education in the field of global health.

Jackson Wong

My name is Jackson Wong and I am running for the position of Executive Director.  I am a sophomore Biology and Pre-med major.  I joined the group at the beginning of fall term this year and has been very active in it since.  I have made almost every meeting and attended both conferences (FaceAIDS and UW).  The group is very important to me for two reasons:  It creates an opportunity for helping the less fortunate and it also creates opportunities for personal growth through experience and education.  I think that one of the great strengths of the group is that any member can bring forward an idea and it can be put into action and I see the Exec. Director as someone who's job is to facilitate this process.  Some ideas I have for the group include starting a coalition of activist groups on campus so that the campus community can work together to achieve more, starting a collection of books/resources/websites/etc that can be added to and accessed by the whole group to help educate each other, and to do more work locally in the Eugene area.  I was the Senior Patrol Leader in my Boy Scout troop for 2 years which included having to run the weekly meetings, planning and running group events, and communicating with the community on behalf of the Troop.  I feel this experience is very applicable to the Executive Director position.  I put this group first above all other extra-curricular activities and want to see the group continue to grow and continue to make a difference.

Kelly Moon

My name is Kelly Moon, I’m a junior here at University of Oregon. I am double majoring in economics and international studies, and getting a double minor in political science and dance. This is my second year in Students for Global Health and my first year as a board member as director of logistics and outreach. I am very passionate about this club, and I believe that we can grow and expand our membership base by taking measures to get our name out on campus. I also believe that we can take on more projects and larger fundraisers in order to promote global health and social justice. I have experience working in group situations and I was the assistant scholarship chair in the Gamma Phi Beta sorority last year. I am also the head coordinator in Western Portland for the 8 to 10 year old age group at my summer job at Camp Conestoga. I believe that I can use my experience, and my dedication, to lead this group into the next year while helping the group expand it's membership and influence at the UO. My dedication, along with my passion for our cause, will lead us to succeed in bigger and better ways.

Running for Director of Education:

Allison Varga          

I am running for the Director of Education position because I am very dedicated to this group, and I would like to get more involved.  Even though I am a First Year student, I have been as involved as I possibly could be in this group, because I care deeply about what Students for Global Health stands for and does.  I am running this year because I plan on being abroad for my junior year, but I still want to help out more than I already am.  I believe that it is important that we learn about what is going on in the world, and what we can do to help; this is why I am interested in the Education position.  I keep very apprised on global events, and I would like to take the opportunity to learn more, and from a different perspective.  I am excited to become more involved!

Elizabeth Schaller

I'm Elizabeth Schaller and I'll be a Sophomore PPPM major next year with a
double minor in French/Latin American Studies. I am running for Director of
Education because I think that our group is a great platform for
information about global and local health issues along with our fundraising
efforts. Keeping our group informed about health issues is extremely
important, not only because we're interested, but also because we want to
share our knowledge with the greater community. The educational content for
the meetings should be a group effort, as we are all well informed students
and I envision the Director of Education being someone who can be available
to members who want to be peer educators at meetings and also facilitate
finding guest speakers and educational conferences/events for us to attend.
One thing I would like to see implemented is having a database for classes
at UO and upcoming internship/volunteer opportunities for group members.
Global Health issues have been a passion of mine for many years and while
my formal leadership experience is limited, I'm ready to start -I am a
dedicated student, very organized, and outgoing!
