Promoting the UN Youth Human Rights Summit

Dear partners and supporters of the UN Youth Human Rights Summit,

Thank you so much for all of your support for the summit so far. The next step is in some ways the easiest one - getting 150 keen and committed delegates!

I want to underline that we can meet 100% of the need of regional students for transport and accommodation. They just need to tick a box on their registration form!

Below are a series of blurbs about the conference to send to different constituencies. Any assistance you can give us in publicity would be deeply appreciated. In addition, Minus18 has designed a fantastic flyer which you can also use to publicise the Summit!

UN Youth Human Rights Summit (Years 9-12)

A unique, day-long conference focused on "LGBT Rights at Home and Abroad", the Human Rights summit will bring together 150 Victorian secondary students to learn about the struggles of LGBT people across the world, and take action to promote human rights.

The Summit will feature an opening address from former High Court Justice the Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG, a roundtable with international human rights activists about how rights are being protected by governments and civil society, as well as interactive workshops on homophobia and human rights promotion.

Most importantly, participants will draft a UN resolution on human rights that will be presented to the Australian Government and the United Nations itself.

Where: University of Melbourne, Union House

When: 9am to 6pm, 16 May 2013

How much: $15 per student

Who: All students in Year 9-12, you don't need to identify as LGBTQ to attend.

The Summit is designed to complement the AusVELS Civics and Citizenship domain as well as VCE Global Politics, VCE English (Identity and Belonging Context), and VCE Legal Studies.

While 75% of the 1 in 10 young Australians who are same-sex attracted or gender diverse experience some form of abuse, the situation is even worse overseas. Being gay is outlawed in 76 countries. It is punishable by death in 7. 

Whether gay or straight, you can help to change this by attending the Human Rights Summit.

On the eve of the International Day Against Homophobia, Victorian secondary students will come together to learn about the struggles of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans (LGBT) people across the world and take action to promotehuman rights.

The Summit will include:

- a keynote address from the Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG, former High Court justice and international humanrights advocate,

- workshops on the causes of homophobia across the world,

- a roundtable discussion with international human rights activists about the work already being done to fight homophobia and transphobia,

- the drafting of a UN resolution on human rights we will present to the Australian Government to take to the United Nations, 

- a model General Assembly where we'll try out our resolution before presenting it to the Government,

- a post-summit social organised by Minus18!

The Summit is open to young Victorians in years 9-12. You don't need to be LGBT to participate - you just need to be interested in LGBT rights across the world.
