Hi team,
Thanks to everyone for coming to the OC meeting yesterday! It was super productive.
Speakers
There are three kinds: opening, closing, and discussion group speakers.
I am handling the opening speakers, who are, in order:
1. Justice Kirby
2. Bob Brown
3. Benjamin Law
4. Tom Ballard
Closing speakers are all ministers, which I'll invite. I need NExec permission which will give me time to draft something pretty. I'm going to try for Bob but also invite Richard Marles, who is both local (I'll go through all of his offices) and probably more likely to attend given the relatively short notice.
I've just gone through the speakers list and expanded them with the new suggestions. I'll cover details with Lewis - our plan is to get all the invites out by Monday of the coming week.
Everyone, if you have additional speaker suggestions, please have them up on the sheet and ready by the end of Friday.
Is the spreadsheet.
Sponsorship
I have reached out to contacts at DLA Piper, McKenzie, BCG, and PWC. I have also activated other, sinister networks at Macquarie, Google, Bain, and the Hong Kong Legislative Council.
Andrew, I'd take a look at City of Melb grants and see if there's anything there we can access. Probably too late but worth a shot.
Edward, let me know how the other sponsorship apps you're chasing are going.
Robbie, can we please get the contact for UN Women?
Michael, thanks very much for chasing UMSU. I think we can make an argument that this benefits students directly but it's subsumed in an argument about the broader university community and given the usual nonsense of student politics I doubt they'll be receptive to it. Let's press ahead and try in the meantime to extract revenues from University central. Even a few hundred dollars (say $500) would be something. I'm also happy to personally meet with the UMSU leadership if that would be productive (I doubt it - I'd not give me money and I've been in their shoes).
Andrew, I agree we can drop the union route on your part. Can you take a look at potential contacts in the university administration who might give us a hand? This is such a huge win for UniMelb for a tiny outlay of capital. If we can just get through the VC's door I'm certain we can get some cash. I've sent an email so we're going through official channels - achingly slowly of course - as well.
Other potential sponsors we wanted to consider were Baker & McKenzie. The rest various different people will use their networks to chase up.
Ideally, we'll have actual contacts ready to be sent prospectuses by no later than Sunday night.
Publicity
As you can see, we've launched the facebook event and website and registration form (at last!).
Everyone - please give me comments and feedback! All suggestions gratefully received.
Everyone - please invite all your secondary school LGBT friends to the FB event and tweet about it!
Minus18 (Michael and Tim) - this is where we're really relying on Minus18 to get the word out. Please could you comprehensively share across your networks?
Alec will contact the safe schools coalition, wayout, the yrg and vicsrc to get the word out through those channels.
Media
We'll do this by drawing up the press releases when we've confirmed a few speakers. I'm going to ask Minus18 to take the lead on this since you have the media contacts already. I'd defer this conversation in general until our next OC meeting (which I imagine will be later in the month).
Social Event
Michael - could I please get a costing for this?
Let's reassess progress at the end of next week. Ideally by then we will have invited all speakers and reached out to all our networks of sponsors, as well as begun our first big series of blasts of publicity.
Good luck all and thanks so much for everything,
Alec
