Once you have your image, crop it into a square. IMPORTANT NOTE: tumblr sizes images based on their width. If your image is vertical, tumblr will display just the middle of it. If your image is horizontal, it will smush the images next to it too.
The left-right diagonal is the first and last gif that will be read (by a latin alphabet writing system). For this one, I put gifs that evoke the idea of fire. The lava lamp one also evokes the general shape of the character.
To see the differences in gifs first hand, go find any gif on your dashboard, right click it and open it in a new tab. Then change the .gifv ending of the url to .gif and see the difference yourself.
