These values would need to be recorded against an individual field in a record as you could have an issue where [Device 1:Record 1: Field 1] is modified offline, and [Device 2: Record 1: Field 2] is also modified offline/online. In this case both changes should be kept.

My own self hosted bitwarden instance went offline for awhile recently and I was totally unable to login to my vault or access any of my passwords, either on mobile, firefox plugin, or desktop (linux) app. This is really concerning because the #1 time when I need access to my passwords is when my self-hosted servers are going offline.

As many others have mentioned in this three-year-old thread, many users perform maintenance to equipment while offline (or connected to VPN with no external network allowed) and must have login/read/write access to their vault.

I read near the start of this thread a Bitwarden employee mentioning how difficult it is to implement offline edit/resync. I can appreciate that, but I also know lots of other tools that must, do, and have implemented synchronization of offline edits with the online copy.

This is a phenomenally horrible situation. Lost WAN overnight. PC was sleeping at the time and for some reason had logged out of BW. Could not get back into bitwarden to access a number of router/service passwords to troubleshoot network issues. Had NO idea that offline login was impossible if for whatever reason your device is logged off. This is truly making us have to rethink our whole choice to migrate to BW and we are re-opening our selection process.

In the case of an offline situation, imagine 5 persons do a password reset and update their offline version of the vault. Now, 5 instances of the same login appear when these people leave their no-internet locations.Given all the powerful group policy features of bitwarden, offline sync can quickly become really difficult.

during normal online use, sync is instant, so remote is used. if local is empty, use remote. if offline, make a change and save to local. when back online, perform a compare of the remote storage on the device. if same. overwrite remote with local, delete local, sync normally.

Same here. Maybe Bitwarden was born as a tool to store online accounts data, but it is very useful for offline data, too. And there are many use cases where offline editing and log in is very important.

I really agree with this point. As a current workaround, you could choose to use KeepassXC (in conjunction with a nextcloud instance if you need minimal online syncing too) to store the offline available passwords. KeepassXC works great on Windows, Linux and Mac.
You could use it in conjunction with for example Keepass2Android (which is also open source).

I understand that Bitwarden can be used completely offline by self-hosting. But self-hosting has its "cons". At least for people who are not technologically inclined. But it also has its pros. Mainly the ability to still access your passwords, if anything happens to Bitwarden servers.

So my question is: Assuming I'm using Bitwarden's online password hosting (the free plan), is there then an option to also self-host offline so that if anything happened to Bitwarden's servers, I'd still have full access to all my passwords?

3) You cannot use Bitwarden when your offline/not connected to the internet as the service is cloud based. With LastPass and 1Password a server is used but you can activate an offline mode so you can still access your data without worrying about an internet connection.

I would like to use valtwarden on my diskstation via docker. it also works so far, only I would like to use Bitwarden only offline on LAN. So no dyndns, port sharing or reverse proxy. I have a lot of instructions, unfortunately bitwarden/vaultwarden only responds to https.

The company will also update its desktop apps with new features. The main issue with the password manager is it's unusable offline unless you are already signed in to your account, but even that has some restrictions. This might change, as Bitwarden will include support for offline editing, which sounds good.

New features will be expected to be "off" as a default state. Variations for non-Boolean values willallow for customization. Offline access (also implying there is no connectivity needed outside theinstallation) to feature states via the service provider will be available given the default stateconfiguration. Local files can exist to load opt-ins to features for self-hosted installations, andsaid installations will default to an offline mode.
