Friends Rating for a Beer

On the official iOS app, when viewing a particular beer details, we get three ratings: You, Friends, and Everyone. I don't see any obvious way to get that Friends rating from the API. The beer info endpoint gives us a list of the 15 most recent checkins, but it's not just friends, and it's not complete. We could make a separate call to the checkins endpoint and filter through a few hundred thousand checkins to get every friend's rating and then average them together, but that seems a little bit excessive. There is a beer.friends" object in the beer info response, but it always seems to have an empty items list and a count of 0, even for beers I know have friend checkins.

Am I missing something obvious, or is that some special sauce that only the official app has access to?
