Alumni Band Newsletter July, 2012

Dear Band Alums,

I sending out a huge thank you to all of you who sent me updates!  It makes the newsletter so much better!  If you didn’t get a chance this month, there is always next month!

Homecoming:

Homecoming is October 6, 2012.  At this point, it should be our usual schedule: Friday night rehearsal and adult gathering (Aaron DeJan, can you check on Archie’s?),  Saturday early rehearsal on the field, pre-game & game, followed by family pizza that evening, provided it doesn’t get changed to a night game (Cristie Gilkey, can you work your magic with pizza?)  Alan Coyner and the Band Boosters have generously invited the Alumni Band to join the band for lunch (or dinner if the game gets moved).  There will be a ‘passing of the hat’ for donations to the John Montgomery Scholarship Fund, so raid your piggy bank or bring your checkbook;)

The August newsletter will have all the details about ordering shirts, and the more specific whens and wheres.  If you already know you are coming this year, please let me know what instrument you’ll be playing, if you need to borrow an instrument, if you need to order a shirt (and size),  and the number of family members joining you at the game.  Then you can check this off your list and ignore me as the nagging gets more intense as the date approaches.

So far, there are no RCO or Phil commitments for that weekend and duck and chucker season won’t start until the 13th.  Unfortunately the McQueen Extravaganza is that day, so there may be some of you with conflicts.

Band Boosters:

The Band Boosters will be feeding the band dinner on Wednesday, August 22.  This is during band camp.  If you remember what a long week that is and would like to come out, help serve the food and meet the current band members, please contact Alan Coyner at neva...@hotmail.com.

The Boosters meet the second Tuesday of each month.  Usually there is an online option to dial into the meeting.  Unfortunately that wasn’t possible for the July meeting.  If you are interested in attending online, please contact Alan, or let me know and I’ll get the information to you.  Updated information is also posted on the Nevada Band Booster page on Facebook.

Condolences:

The Alumni Band would like to extend condolences to all the victims and survivors of the shooting in Aurora, CO.  In particular, we would like to send our thoughts and prayers to the friends and family of Jonathan Blunk, whose body was returned to Reno for burial.

Member Updates:

 Ken and Amy (Crookham) Collins

Time to report on yet another move for Amy and myself. We left Italy in April and are now residing in Millington, TN. We took about a month to visit family on the way out. The highlight of our trip was attending the graduation of our daughter, Stephanie, from
The College of William and Mary in Virginia.

My new job is as the Head of the U.S. Navy Music Program. Amy has just been hired as an ICU nurse at The "Med" in downtown Memphis. We really miss the experience of living in Europe, but it is nice to be back on the same continent with our family and friends. If anyone happens to be traveling through Memphis please stop by and say hello. We have already found some great BBQ and fried chicken, and , of course, amazing music.  That's all for now.  Thank you for keeping us all in touch.

Laurie Wellner-Burner

I wanted to say hi and respond to your request on FB for an update on what's been happening.

I'm currently working as Director of Special Education for the Perris Union High School District in Perris, California.  I also teach part time at Claremont Graduate University in the Department of Education and have been instrumental in developing their certification program for the California Department of Education's credential authorization in the area of autism.  I teach graduate level courses specific to topics in special education, autism, and behavior disorders. I have been fortunate to offer private consulting on a number of issues related to conflicts between parents, public school districts, and student placement in special education as well as providing training and presentations for staff in various districts in southern California.

I have recently published my dissertation (2010) entitled, The Existence of Trust in the Placement Process of 3-8 Year Old Students with Autism, and a more recent article published in the educational journal entitled, "Leadership" with the title, "Building Parent Trust in the Special Education Setting."

Additionally, I am completing my 2nd year of law school!  I am a co-editor and a writer for the student bar association's journal entitled, "The Concord Advocate."

This may be wayyyy more than you were looking for.  :) In any case, I hope are well.

Thank you for all of the work you do for the alumni family.  Hugs to you and the UNR family!!

Nick Jacques

I wanted to let you know where I am this fall so you can include me in the newsletter. I'm now the band director at Carson Middle School. Thanks for all you do!

Cody Forcier

Cody Forcier (UNR, BMusEd, '03/OREGON MMusPerf, '06) is now the full-time Band Director at Shaw Middle School in Spanish Springs, a suburb of Sparks, NV. He was also the Co-Chair of Exhibits & Advertising for the Nevada Music Educator Association All-State Music Conference in Las Vegas, NV. He also received a grant to attend the Conn-Selmer Institute at Bethel College in Mishawa/Elkhart, Indiana. This year he played tuba and trombone in the Reno Wind Symphony, Reno Municipal Band, Dave Gupton Kicks Jazz Bands, Ronn Legg Big Band, Let's Dance Swing Band, Coral Brass Quintet, Carson City Symphony, and the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra. This year he wrote/performed/toured/recorded and released a CD with Sucka Punch, and played live with other bands such as Miz Whitton, Tyler Stafford, and Jelly Bread. Lora Key

After several years teaching at Chabad in Las Vegas, Lora will be teaching at Our Lady of Las Vegas this fall, Language Arts and Social Studies.

Will Bumgardner

Will has taken a new position at Bishop Manogue for this fall, teaching Math.

Alan Sullivan

(Alan has already started his new year, back in Washoe County).

First week teaching 6th grade beginning band is in the books, and....
I couldn't be happier. Got a couple of schools that need some "love" but I have found some truly amazing young kids. Now, if I could only get instruments for all of my Title 1 kids...
Anyone have a horn you want to donate to some under privileged kids, hit me up.

Bryan Smith

Congratulations to Bryan Smith and Robin Reaney Smith on their wedding!

Todd and Patty Hudson

The Alumni Band extends our thoughts and prayers to Todd and Patty as they learn more than they ever wanted to know about Type 1 Diabetes following their daughter Lexi’s recent diagnosis.

Wolf Pack v. UC Berkley:

I received the following announcement and I’m passing it along in case any Reno Alums are interested in attending the game in Berkley:

I am a Tour Operator here in Reno and will be organizing a bus trip to the Wolf Pack game in Berkley on September 1st, 2012.  It would be transportation, tolls and parking fee for a cost of $77.00 per person.  Just think you wouldn’t have to worry about driving, where to park and your group can sit back and relax and leave the driving to us!   The bus will be departing from the Grand Sierra Resort, northwest parking lot (plenty of room for parking) at 7:00am and returning around 9:00pm.  Please let me know if your group is interested in joining us for this fun filled day!

Look forward to hearing from you
