Alumni Band Newsletter February, 2012
Dear Band Alums,
Please excuse the tardiness of this newsletter. You would think with the bonus day in February I would have it out on time. All I can say is never compete for computer time with a teenager on a deadline.
As always, please send me your updates, news, upcoming concerts, events, and ideas for the newsletter.
Homecoming:
I do not have a date for Homecoming 2012 at this point. The football schedule is largely finalized, but I know there are some issues to resolve. As soon as I get the date, I’ll pass it on to you immediately and post it on our Facebook page.
Band Boosters:
For those of you interested in being involved with the Nevada Band Booster’s Organization, the next meeting will be Tuesday night, February 13th at UNR in CFA 112. We will also be broadcasting the meeting online at http://www.anymeeting.com/unrbba1. You can logon to video chat or just watch and add your comments via text chat. We used this program for the last meeting and it is a huge improvement over the ustream program (better quality and no commercials!) Please join in if you can.
Please feel free to submit your agenda items or other comments/concerns to unrband...@gmail.com!
For more information about this group, see the website at: www.nevadabandboosters.com.
John Montgomery Memorial Scholarship:
The John H.K. Montgomery Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998, and was endowed in 2005. It was established as a tribute to John, a vital part of the marching band, as well as the music department as a whole. He died exploring a mine near Virginia City, where he was the music director, leaving behind a wife, young children, students, and many friends. His funeral was the impetus for the formation of the Alumni Band in 1997.
When the economy crashed, this scholarship fell below endowment levels and was not awarded for some years. Thanks to the investigative work of Dr. Plenk, we now know it is back over the threshold and may have enough money in it by the fall to make a small award. Since the current band members do not receive any grant-in-aid, or scholarship to march, any little bit helps.
I am looking for people who knew John to compile a biography so that award recipients can at least get a glimpse of why people would care so much about him to raise money in his honor. If you are interested in working on this project, or contributing stories/photos/etc. please let me know.
You can always make a tax deductible contribution to this scholarship fund. You mail your check to: University of Nevada, Reno Foundation; Morrill/0162; Reno, Nevada 89557-0162 and indicate on the check that it is for the John H.K. Montgomery Memorial Scholarship.
